Are there any guns in your home . . . . .YMMV, FAR

. . . . . said the doctor to my bride when she had two of my kids in for their wellness visits today. What does that have to do with anything? And the doc didn't let up. My bride kept telling her that she doesn't need to answer that question; so the doc asked it multiple times throughout the visit.

I've always enjoyed your simple sense of humor. I forgot how much fun we use to have in the 3rd grade calling people "retarded" and saying words like "smithereens". Thanks for bringing that back. Cheers

Frankly, I don't remember anything like that when I was in the third grade. But then I kept going to school/college/grad school for quite some time thereafter. I suppose if I was mustered out of school in the 3rd grade, as you were, I'd remember a lot more about the experience! bulb

That's not really the appropriate way to use "mustered", Mister College Graduate. I can't really say it's 100% incorrect, but it certainly doesn't fall in line with generally accepted usage.

To be "mustered out" of the military is the be discharged, so I'll accept his usage. Still doesn't change someone from being ignorant for implying that someone who owns a gun might have a family history of mental "retardation."

I've never run across that usage myself, despite growing up in a military family and then in the military myself Scratchchin

You're right, and I never learned to read. I feel so alone in your wise presence.

Iagree He may as well say that I was court-martialed if he was going to use a term used primarily by the military.

Exactly. Anyway, the reason that doctors ask about guns in the home is because it's a risk factor for accidental childhood deaths. From the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Quote :
Pediatricians and other child health care professionals are urged to counsel parents about the dangers of allowing children and adolescents to have access to guns inside and outside the home. The AAP recommends that pediatricians incorporate questions about the presence and availability of firearms into their patient history taking and urge parents who possess guns to prevent access to these guns by children. Safer storage of guns reduces injuries, and physician counseling linked with distribution of cable locks appear to increase safer storage. Nevertheless, the safest home for a child or adolescent is one without firearms.
