What is your deal-hunting origin story?

Hello, I hope you are doing well.

Quote :
In comic book terminology, an origin story is an account or back-story revealing how a character or team gained their superpowers and/or the circumstances under which they became superheroes or supervillains.
What is your origin story? Sure, we may not have superpowers or are superheroes or supervillains, but what many of us do here is pretty super.

Were there events in your childhood that led you to your life of deal-hunting? Did you perhaps come from certain circumstances that changed you into a person who hates retail prices? Or perhaps this is all a new development and you're just doing it for fun, or out of necessity. (Oh, you may also be a person who does deal-hunting on the side and is mainly in these forums for The Lounge.)

I delivered papers as a kid and would finger through the Sunday ads before they went out to everyone. I was always amazed at the "deals" being offered in the ads and began hitting stores soon after my morning route.

Then I discovered SlickDeals.

I actually stumbled on this site a while before I joined, too. I was lurking for a bit and then decided to sign up to make a comment on a thread about how to get a free TV/gift card from doing all of these ad craps. I signed up for FW before this site but never actually used it. laugh out loud The very first deal site I used though I think was something called cheap bargains or something I don't remember anymore. I'd sign up for a ton of samples and didn't know what the hell to do with them anymore.

I started off googling and ran across some ..last chance auction site...where you could by stuff that was .....well crap apparently . I think I did buy like 2 or 3 things before I gave up.

Then a neighbor mentioned SD...with a warning...to not blame him.

And he and his wife proceeded to laugh and laugh and laugh at how often the UPS, Fed Ex and Staples trucks came to the house...

I was going to Georgia from Philadelphia by car on 95. And I had to relief myself so I took the exit at Newark, DE and there I saw TigerDirect store. They had a sign displaying the word "sale" in big words, so I went in and that's how the FAR-mania began. Then I googled tiger direct and discovered slickdeals.

EDIT: I checked my records, the first thing I bought of slickdeals was Kaspersky and from TigerDirect, Dragon Speaking + Total Defense bundle.

Thanks slickdeals, I don't know how my life would be with out these awesome deals.

When I still lived with my parents, I was sitting at my computer and my dad said "Hey, there's some new website called amazon...it sells almost every CD you can think of and books too.....and it seems like it's a lot cheaper. So I went there, found sales that were better than store sales, realized there was a whole new world to shopping out there besides brick and mortar stores.

We didn't have much money when I was younger. In fact if it had 4 legs and wasn't the family pet my father killed it and we ate it. From deer to rabbit to muskrat. Frown So Ive always been frugal.

Fast forward to 1999, I had a child and took off 6 months from work. We had to cut back. I was online and all these start up companies were offering these goodies for free or next to free. I remember getting cases of toilet paper delivered. lol Joined a couple bargain hunting message boards and the rest is history.

I didn't do anything like price tag switching. I just got tired of seeing money go too quick. Can't remember how I found SD, but I do remember abusing the FAR paper at staples last spring and that sealed the deal. So far I've had a 100% rebate success rate.

OOOh ooh. Now I remember. 2009ish newegg sales and target clearance where I got a $50 RC for $12.50. Made a decent parts car.
