Impacts
A prolonged period or consecutive days of heat can cause additional heat stress to segments of the population.
Those prone to heat stress could suffer, especially where no shade or air conditioning is available.
Strenuous outdoor activity could lead to heat injuries such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or heat cramps.
Hazardous weather
Maximum temperatures are expected to reach the lower 90s today and Tuesday across much of southeastern Michigan. Nighttime temperatures will not fall off much with readings likely holding in the 70s.
A tropical airmass is in place across southeastern Michigan. With limited airmass modification expected, surface dewpoints will range in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
The combination of high heat and humidity will cause heat index values to push 100 degrees today and the middle 90s on Tuesday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.
