Keurig coffee makers will implement DRM to block third-party coffee

94 105 March 3, 2014 at 06:11 PM in News (4)
I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place. But I know a lot of you love your K-cups and I was wondering how you Keurig users would feel about this. I'm unclear how they are going to keep the option open to brew in a Keurig with coffee grounds, unless they are cutting that out, too. Maybe if enough of us raise a stink, they will backtrack? It has worked before on other companies.

The only way I could see them surviving something like that is if they sold the machines at a loss like printers and made all their money off k-cups. I could see them roping people in with $25 machines and locking them into keurig brand pods after that.

LOL. K-cups are already too expensive, this will just make the prices even more absurd. The coffee also tastes like burnt plastic. I'll stick to french press for 1 or 2 cup servings. Much better tasting coffee.
I'm happy for you, if you can get good coffee out of a french press. It's what I'm currently using (waiting for my Keurig to arrive) and I use a lot of beans to get weak blah coffee. I have my own burr grinder and I used to grind everyday, but it made an unholy mess and I'm pretty sure my neighbors hated me for it. (I think their bedroom wall is on the other side of my kitchen)

The only time I had really good coffee at home was when I had one of those Bialetti stove top things with the special nozzle that produced creama. It was extremely temperamental, sometimes not making anything at all. And it took forever to get my cup of joe every morning. I'm the sort of person who shouldn't leave the house until she has had her coffee.

Confession, sometimes before I've had my coffee, I'm not coherent enough to make coffee.

I hate the mess of a regular coffee machine for just myself..I love my Keurig..I don't care that the coffee is weaker...it's fast and efficient.

You are probably using too much water. I use the scoop that came with my french press and do one scoop of coffee per 4oz of water(I actually measure the water to be precise), and my coffee always comes out nice and strong. I believe the scoop is equal to one tablespoon. Also, be sure to always use a coarse grind with a french press. If it's still coming out weak, try a different bean.

Iagree People are unhappy that there are plastics in food yet they're ok with running boiling water through a plastic coffee machine and plastic K-cup. There are tests that show the chemicals in the plastic leach into the boiling water.

Used to use a Bialetti on the stove top, the only time there was a problem was when water got on the metal rim or the gasket, so it didn't make a good seal when you screwed the Bialetti together. You also need to use a coarser grind and have the burner all the way up. But it was a PITA to clean.

We now have a good burr grinder and this single boiler machine and love it. I'm very incoherent in the mornings due to a nightly sleeping pill, yet have no problems making coffee with this machine. It makes a wonderful single cup of coffee with a nice crema on top, and the cappuccinos I make on it are better than any I've had in a coffee shop. Frothing the milk took a bit of practice but now I can do it in my sleep too.

I got one of those Hario 02 thingies and I like it so far. It is, of course, more effort than a Keurig.

yeah, the documentation that came with my press said one tablespoon of whole beans for every 8oz of water, but i think it's closer to one tablespoon of ground beans for every 8oz of water. i've done it enough now that i don't use the scoop; i just know how much should be in the hopper of my grinder. i don't measure the water; i put a lot in the kettle, fill the press to where i know it should be, and put the rest in my tumbler to warm it up while the grounds are steeping.

Moon: i know you didn't come in here to get tips on french press, but if others are having problems, these are some tips you might try.
  • try using different ratios of water to ground beans.
  • as others have said, ensure you're using the coarsest grind available.
  • make sure the water you're adding is just under boiling. i get mine boiling in a teakettle, set it aside on the stove, grind my beans, put them in the press, then pour in the water. it probably sits for less than 30 seconds from a rolling boil to when i it meets the beans.
  • let it steep for a good 4-5 minutes. a lot of places i saw recommended less than that, but 4:30 is what seems to work best with my setup/preferences.
  • i stir mine every minute or so while it's steeping. my grinds tend to gather on top initially and fall as they get soaked through, so stirring 3-4 times ensures they get mixed well in the water.

French press is the way to go! I'd recommend you try it before investing in a K-machine. You will save money and will mostly likely have better tasting coffee. Not as convenient as a K-Cup but I think it works great.
