Automakers will be required to install backup cameras in most new vehicles by May 2018, a federal agency announced Monday. [cnn.com]

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a long-awaited rule requiring all new cars, SUVs, and minivans, as well as some new small trucks and buses to carry rear visibility technology.

Unnecessary is in the eye of the beholder.

As does my wifes kia sorento. Which is a much better location than the dash, however it is rarely found in the mirror and more commonly in the dash. The only time I've seen it in the mirror is when the car doesn't have the big touchscreen display in the dash, which will be common place in cars soon...and likely where the cameras video will be displayed.

Rear facing cameras, including those that automakers already offer, would save between 59 and 69 deaths a year, NHTSA said.
Also per the NHTSA...

What are we doing to combat the scourge of bicyclist deaths? It seems to me that banning bicycles would save nearly ten times as many lives as mandatory backup cameras.

What about bicycle avoidance sensors? Maybe auto steer that will slam your car into the nearest building or parked car to save the bicycle?

I love mine, but I have become dependent on it. It's hard driving a car without cameras and sensors now laugh out loud.

The wife's new Pilot has one. It's nifty, but I still use mirrors. I can see it becoming a crutch for new drivers that are used to the camera and have to drive a car without one.

If you need a camera to back up.....
If you need side sensors to let you know if someone's beside you....
If you need automatic parking assist....

You really shouldn't be driving!

I have a back camera and object sensors in my ford f150. The camera is in the left side of the rearview mirror. I felt it mandatory considering my child's age. I mean it was a few hundred more for the piece of mind that...shit I lost the run over my wife didnt see her excuse.

The problem I see is when the dealship cannot get the issue to show while they are testing. So I'm running with a camera that doesnt want to run at odd times.

I am sure some crotchety old man said the same thing about brakes that assist you in not locking them up and power assisted steering also.

My Dodge Dart has a backup camera in it. I really didn't care either way when I bought it. Now it is weird backing up in my '99 Honda Civic without one. laugh out loud

Still, I check the mirrors first then the monitor before backing up in my Dart. It is an added level of safety. Am I worried about the cost to repair/replace if it fails? Yes. I hope to purchase the lifetime warranty through Chrysler soon.

You just like it when babies get killed when people back into their kids without looking to see what's behind them.

i dunno if you're joking, but my brother's 2013 altima has this standard. I tried to look through it to backup and park. Wow its useless. The angle of it is just all screwy.

I'd still instead either look back or use my side mirror. I dunno how this helps. Its not like the roadtest will let you look at your backup camera to parallel park lol
