Automakers will be required to install backup cameras in most new vehicles by May 2018, a federal agency announced Monday. [cnn.com]

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a long-awaited rule requiring all new cars, SUVs, and minivans, as well as some new small trucks and buses to carry rear visibility technology.

It does give you a view into one more blind spot that mirrors don't reach. You know, in case you forgot you set your baby down on the ground behind your back bumper and are about to back out of the driveway. But you still can't rely on just the camera to back up.

That's why backup sensors would make far more sense if they are going to make anything mandatory.

We should just be mandated to hire a homeless person to check behind he car and marshal us back each time we reverse...

How many reverse gears do you have? Huh

I can't remember ever having to shift while backing up. Dontknow

But you also have a clutch which must be balanced with the gas pedal. Shifting your pelvis slightly to be able to look backwards makes it more difficult to use both feet to manage the pedals.

I never had any problems with this in the last 30+ years. Now that I am aware it is a problem I probably won't be able to back up any more.

Now I'm sitting here trying to think about how looking backwards should cause me any difficulty when reversing in a manual... I guess I'll try to remember when I drive home.

Yep, I fully agree. I've expressed my favoritisim towards sensors over cameras already. They are the much better way. Me thinks some NTHSA person just wants a camera on their company car and they were only given base model fords, and this was one way for her to get it...
