In 6th grade a bunch of friends and I were climbing this huge tree for hours...all playing around. One kid was pulling the vines off of it...he's the only one who did not get poison oak. I had it all over...my face, hands, arms, legs...and it was picture week at school. laugh out loud So umm yeah good thing they had a day to make that up.

Wow! That's crazy! DH just killed some in the woods that had leaves on it bigger than his hand! Round Up will put the hurtin' on it.

At Fort Polk(an army base about two hours North of here) someone thought that burning a bunch of it would be the best way to get rid of some that had been cut down. Countless numbers of soldiers got it in their lungs! It put a bunch of them in the hospital.
A Scout Leader did that with my husband when he went camping when very young, and the entire group of kids got poison ivy in their faces, eyes, everywhere on their faces. What a farking idiot for a Leader Ranting All the parents had to come to this Island where they were camping to come get them immediately and take them all to the hospital, it was that bad shake head

It's even worse - the "branch" that fell was actually the aerial root. No wonder I broke out like mad. Now I've gotta figure out how to get rid of it. I also have a bad feeling that I will be killing half my lawn since the "branches" were all over my lawn.

You can probably get a cheap Tyvek suit at any place that sells paint. That paired with some rubber gloves and a face mask should keep you safe. Tape trash bags over your shoes. Keep the gloves on while you undress and put the suit, vines and gloves in a trash bag. I would get some of the body wash and shower immediately. It's the oil from the plant that causes the rash, so make sure that you wash any of your garden tools as well.

I realized that now the saw that I used and the gloves, safety glasses, and breathing mask are all contaminated. The glasses were brand new and can easily be cleaned. The other two are disposable in my eyes.

A few of my friends think I should go to the doctor and get steroids. I'm fighting that urge, but my arms, my neck, and a few spots on my legs look horrible.

the only problem I have now is waking up in the middle of the night and having to re-apply some anti itch cream so I can continue sleeping.

Which is why I clean all my garden tools immediately after use; so they are not contaminated. My husband thinks I'm Crazy and a little too compulsive about this, but I know if I've cut anything that harbors something on it, I've gotten rid of it right away.

The gloves, mask and glasses - dump all of them - it's not worth taking the risk that the oil is in some small area of the glasses that you don't get clean enough and for you to break out near your eyes.

As thearteest is stating, there is a safe way to do this, one just has to be careful.

Go to the doctor's, when this happened to me, they had to give me something for it - like you it got really bad - so why keep making yourself miserable????

I may end up going to the doctor if things don't improve over the weekend. But if I do go, I have to post in the lounge per the rules first. laugh out loud

Now I'm glad I didn't try to burn the wood that I cut. It will be promptly going in a garbage bag.

Go to the doctor's Smack

Yep, be very thankful you did not burn any of that wood, there are enough folks here with the horror stories of what happens with that. My husband still talks about that incident to this day, and he was a kid when it happened, it really affected him badly, as far as how stupid a person could be. He was a Scout Leader for our son, and he made sure all the kids knew better than to do something like this as well, he told them this story; so they would remember it and take it forward in life.

My dad inhaled some as a kid. It almost killed him.

My primary doc is on vacation so I'd have to go to a walk-in clinic. Don't really like most of the ones around me.

Picca's right. Some steroids will help the rash to go away much more quickly, and it will help your skin to heal and leave you with less scars.

You might ask around. Some of your friends may not be sensitive to poison ivy. I can get within 5 feet of it, but my husband can walk through it all day. You may know someone that can help you or pick it up for you.

I play hockey with a guy that owns a landscaping company. I'll probably ask him for suggestions or even contract him to take care of it.

I cut what I could, and most of it is now dying behind my back yard fence.
