Update post #91 - Cupcake needs help for her little muffin. **Thank you everyone for your help**

12,738 11,124 May 21, 2014 at 07:00 AM in Help
My son is a big time gamer and his computer is very old and slow. He has saved $1,000 for a new one. I'm so proud of him for saving his money for it.

It needs to be a gaming worthy Desktop computer.

Any suggestions for him?

He just needs a tower. Has a good monitor already.

Yes I know that we have a forum for this kinda thing, but I heart my lounge friends and trust you to do me right. Blowkiss

Having spent a fair amount on state of the art technology in yesteryears, $1000 for a gaming rig is about 2x what I'd personally spend on a rig though I do build my own PCs and have a decent stock of parts your son probably does not have (i.e. case, power supply, optical and hard drives).

So, I'm a bit miffed that people are belittling $1000 on a gaming PC. I think that your son can spend that amount and be thrilled with his purchase.

You don't need a $400-500 video card. One for $200 will be great. Hell, I spent $65 on my graphics card during that Best Buy $50 off $100 fiasco and have had it for 1+ years and still do great on it. Not the latest, not the greatest, but it plays all the 3+ year old titles I like great. I took about a 8 year hiatus on PC gaming because the addiction starting costing me. Now, for like $60, I have some 90+ steam and 20+ origin titles many of which were Triple A titles back in the day. Do I have Battlefield 4 or Titanfall? Nope, but one day when they're cheap (if ever, if not I won't buy).

Cupcake, all that I ask is that you promise to post a photo of your son's computer once he gets it! Smilie
I can't build a computer. Frown

So I need one already built. But I think for around $1,000 he can get one that will work great for him.

When I get one for him I will post a picture of it for sure.

It was a bit of an exaggeration but I was talking about these comments saying that he can't do much for $1000...
My son wanted better upgrades than what the PC offered, so that's why he paid more, more ram and a better graphics card will easily raise the price much higher.
Even without the upgrades it was over 1k. He saved and paid for it himself.

I wasn't belittling anyone, wasn't my intention. Sadwalk

I didn't say you did or that your son's gaming rig was too much. Just pointing out that a gaming rig can be had for less than that is all... I know plenty of hardcore gamers that have $2000+ rigs but it doesn't sound like OP's son is that hardcore. I just didn't want her to get frustrated and think that she had to throw a bunch of extra money at it...

My last paragraph sentence about the belittling was in reference to the quote below, I should have added the quote above my comment. Smilie

Make sure you select an operating system that he feels comfortable with, and that will play the games that he wants. I like Windows 8, but it has a learning curve and doesn't play nice with all of the games out there.

How about a decent used gaming system, off of CL or ebay, that's a few years old? Mention the USAF and meet the seller in your uniform and they may less likely risk scamming you. Wink

1. http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/2...redirect=1
2. Click on "Outlet Home"
3. On the left hand side, beneath "Outlet Desktops" click on Alienware [dell.com]
4. Choose the system on the right (the third one in the center of the screen). It's the X51 R2 series machine.
5. Scroll down until you see the $1029 priced system
6. Here are the features:
  • Processor: Intel Core 4th Generation i7-4770 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.9 GHz)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive
  • 8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (2x 4GB) Non-ECC
  • 8X DVD +/- RW Drive
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Ti with 2 GB GDDR5

Oh sorry... I quickly read the thread and cav mentioned that a graphics card can eat up half of a $1000 budget and your comment about $2500 rigs.... Personally, I've been impressed by what cheaper machines can do though I fully admit, I'm not demanding a 60 fps baseline on max settings with all titles on the market now.

I don't think Cupcake's son needs a $500 graphics card (which some of them go for $800 or $900 when I looked months ago) nor does he likely need a $2,500 rig either. Rather, for $1000, I think he can get a pretty state of the art machine that may not hit max AA'ing on 1920x1200, but can get pretty darn close. Also, I doubt that her son is doing QuadHD gaming which will definitely need a several thousand dollar machine to compute away for a while at current and future releases.

$1000 can get you quite a bit, and I don't want cupcake hesitating about making the purchase thinking that her son will ultimately be disappointed. Her son is going to load up some games and she's going to be like "Holy S***!!!!" on the graphics.

let's not even go there for OT or joke discussion. No need to confuse cupcake.

Iagree with VF

That one is pretty nice, I vote for that one.

Should exceed his needs and could easily upgrade the RAM with a SD score down the road.

Has plenty of RAM to start, and a hefty graphics card already, too.
