Although a large caliber (.45ACP) the gun is quite heavy with a good balance so the recoil isn't nearly as bad as one would expect.
Some precautions to take:
1. Make sure your thumb is way down and nowhere near the slide or you may poke yourself in the eye.
2. Make sure the fleshy part between your thumb and forefinger is below the beaver tail at the top back of the handgrip or the slide coming back may 'bite' you...
Otherwise the 1911 is a great and fun gun to shoot. I'm seriously considering this one to replace my Taurus 24/7Pro (also .45ACP) as a truck gun even though the 24/7 has a larger mag capacity. Simply because of the reliability and handling of the 1911.(not saying the 24/7 is not reliable as it is. I just love the 1911) I have to wait until tomorrow to confirm my budget allows for it.
Truthfully I don't think the pliticritters in California consider any firearm 'friendly', but the above link shows you what is 'approved' for purchase.
Edit: See above post.

It shoots surprisingly well and has had shockingly few malfs (the only malfunction I had was when I was trying to shoot with only my left hand and limp-wristed it). I've run it hot with rapid fire and have had zero problems.
My $300 ATI isn't as nice as my $1,200 Kimber but I tell you what, the Kimber isn't $900 better. This is a good buy, and if I didn't already have one I'd be all over this deal.
If you are looking for a 1911 to keep forever, get the Ruger. If you just want a pistol to plink with and cost is a very real factor, get the ATI, and spend the difference on ammo and magazines.
Not all bad reviews, sounds hit or miss, but even 50/50 odds when buying any gun thats a few hundred bucks isnt worth the gamble....especially when I start 2nd guessing myself when Im about to pay for it..
Otherwise I would have loved to pick up this deal, but now I'll just wait it out... sadly... but every company does have its lemons.. just for me, I've seen enough unhappy customers that I'll wait this one out.
Not $299 and no Novak sights but $399 after MIR and with green fiber optic front sights.
