So What Does Everyone Think About Deflate-Gate?

25,141 707 January 22, 2015 at 12:50 PM
The title says it. What does everyone think about this bizarre "Deflate-Gate" deal that is far more interesting that this year's Super Bowl? Belichick reaffirmed that he knew nothing at all about the football preparation and denied having anything to do with it.

Tom Brady is supposed to be talking publicly very soon and may be admitting to arranging to have the footballs prepped to the way he likes them.

So, is this a big deal? Is this something that happens with pretty much every team and it has just become public?

I don't give two farks.

Or one.

Or a fractional amount of one.

My opinion - if the pressure of the balls has *such* an impact on the game (e.g. night and day difference):

- the penalties for misinflation should be very severe - as in bans and such; after all, the punishment should fit the crime

OR, a much better option IMGO

- rather than the farce of each team having their own balls, let the NFL bring in a set which is entirely under the control of the game refs - that way there is no way they can be fooled with

A friend of mine did quite a bit of coaching - not NFL granted, but he said that all teams engage in shady tactics, which is also why you generally don't see ganging up on a team when one is caught.

Because you are okay with cheating or because you don't think it has any effect on the game?

It is apparently a big deal to some. All the major news networks are currently standing by waiting for Brady to speak in a few minutes.

the Pats were given referee balls for the entire second half where they outscored the Clots (nickname, not typo) 28-0.

only thing deflated Sunday night was Luck's ego.

It's a big deal to anti-Patriots football fans. For the rest of the world it is a waste of time.

Me personally, I could care less how much air was in those footballs. The Colts scored 7 farking points and the Blount ran for 148 yards and scored 3 TDs on the ground. Brady could have been throwing bricks and the Colts wouldn't have had any chance of winning this game.

Clearly it didn't mean anything in the outcome of that game, but should it be overlooked just because it didn't help them? Or should the rule just not exist all all?

In my opinion there should be a little broader range on what the team can do with the footballs based on the quarterback's preference. They use a different ball for the kickers that works better for them, why not allow the same for the quarterbacks?

But considering that the rule does exist, and if it turns out that the balls were tampered with after the NFL inspected them and okayed them, is that not a violation that needs to be addressed?

or if it is an issue, why do the teams have access to the balls without refs or security from the NFL in place. as they (game day officiating crew) weigh all balls 2hrs before kickoff. so either someone paid off a ref to deflate, someone paid off the ballboy to deflate, or there is a break in process of making sure the balls are secure.

there is so much phrasing going in this statement that my mind is about to explode.

This is only an issue because it's the Patriots. How many QBs came out this week and said that they "customize" their game balls? Rodgers flat out admitted that he hates when the refs take the extra air out after he overfills the game balls. He might win MVP this year and that statement isn't headlines because he doesn't play for the Patriots.

Bottom line, if the league didn't want QBs setting up their game balls then they wouldn't give the footballs back to the team after the inspection. Unfortunately they are now stuck between a rock and a hard place.

over-inflated is actually what Rodgers was quoted to preferring, but your point still is the same. but yes, it is big news because it is the Patriots. unfortunately they put themselves in that situation. Just like a majority of Suh's latest on the field fines would have not even been looked at by the front office in a majority of cases.

You are assuming they are actually getting checked, which IMO is a bigger issue.
