So What Does Everyone Think About Deflate-Gate?

25,141 707 January 22, 2015 at 12:50 PM in Sporting Goods
The title says it. What does everyone think about this bizarre "Deflate-Gate" deal that is far more interesting that this year's Super Bowl? Belichick reaffirmed that he knew nothing at all about the football preparation and denied having anything to do with it.

Tom Brady is supposed to be talking publicly very soon and may be admitting to arranging to have the footballs prepped to the way he likes them.

So, is this a big deal? Is this something that happens with pretty much every team and it has just become public?

or like bunny alluded to. another possible thought, let a QB have the ball the way he wants it like a baseball pitcher. some like to rough up the leather, lick their fingers, use dirt from the mound, or take the ball as it is from the homeplate umpire, use pinetar. if the ability to make the same modifications is consistent and available to all the players, it makes no difference in the outcome of the game.

You are assuming they are actually getting checked, which IMO is a bigger issue.
The league says that they are inspected and said that these balls were inspected and were within the correct parameters before the game. If it comes out they are lying about that then that is another issue altogether.

To add, Brad Johnson paid off NFL officials to tamper with the balls he used in the Super Bowl. Makes you wonder what else is getting paid off. The whole NFL is a scam. laugh out loud
And why was this stuff not looked into before, theres been so many allegations and nothing was looked into?

But thats my point, they got paid off once. Just makes ya wonder if they even care to check them or what happens. Ya know.

This is only an issue because it's the Patriots. How many QBs came out this week and said that they "customize" their game balls? Rodgers flat out admitted that he hates when the refs take the extra air out after he overfills the game balls. He might win MVP this year and that statement isn't headlines because he doesn't play for the Patriots.

Bottom line, if the league didn't want QBs setting up their game balls then they wouldn't give the footballs back to the team after the inspection. Unfortunately they are now stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I haven't heard the actual quote from Rodgers, just that he prefers an over-inflated ball and thinks that the league should just set a minimum pressure and not have a maximum pressure. Did he actually say that he ever arranged to have a ball inflated beyond what the rules allow after they were inspected?

Roughing up the ball is actually allowed, just has to have the right amount of air. Go figure. laugh out loud

I wish I still had a regulation football so I could see myself how different it would feel between what is allowed and what they were actually at.

I'm sure I've heard already, but what pressure were the footballs at when they found out the problem?

So Brady started off talking about how he has found that !2.5# is the perfect pressure for the football for him. Yet he says he never noticed any difference in the balls in this game, including in the second half when they were fully inflated. So the guy who handles the football more than pretty much any other player didn't notice anything, yet a linebacker who rarely handles the football noticed a problem when he intercepted a pass?

I wonder how Brady feels about Belichick saying that he will make sure that the balls are inflated enough so that if they lose a little pressure during the game they will still be within the rules? He wants them at 12.5# and Belichick says they are going to be higher.

I keep hearing talk about the weight of the football, and "weighing" the football. Are people just carelessly interchanging weight with pressure? I'm far from an expert in science or physics, but does more or less air in the ball make any difference in its weight? To me it doesn't seem like that would be possible, unless they are filling it with something besides regular air.

I heard one caller who called in to several talk shows on the Sirius NFL station yesterday and he kept talking about how the different pressures wouldn't make more than maybe an ounce of difference in the weight of the ball. To me that sounded stupid because I don't think there would be any difference at all.

Am I missing something? Does the weight of the ball change at all with pressure?

If this is something that goes on regularly and is generally just overlooked with a wink and a nod then I would like to see a bunch of big name quarterbacks come out and say it isn't a big deal because everyone does it and everyone is okay with it. Then maybe they could just fix the rule and move on.

I don't either. Yet I keep hearing sportscasters, talking heads on news channels, and even athletes talking about weighing the balls and referring to the weight of the ball. It makes me want to smack somebody.

It's a big deal to anti-Patriots football fans. For the rest of the world it is a waste of time.

Me personally, I could care less how much air was in those footballs. The Colts scored 7 farking points and the Blount ran for 148 yards and scored 3 TDs on the ground. Brady could have been throwing bricks and the Colts wouldn't have had any chance of winning this game.
Yup. However, as a Pats fan I hate to see shit like this. I was embarrassed during Spygate, and this just sucks again, except it looks like a second infraction, which just helps to tarnish Brady and Belichick's legacy in the NFL.
