The BBC has suspended Jeremy Clarkson following allegations of a fracas with a Top Gear producer.
The BBC2 show will not be broadcast this Sunday [independent.co.uk] while the BBC investigates the allegation.
Clarkson was already on a final warning from the BBC following a string of accusations of racism.
The BBC said: "Following a fracas with a BBC producer Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation. No one else has been suspended. Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday. The BBC will be making no further comment at this time."

The show, rather than called "Top Gear Live" will be billed as Clarkson, Hammond and May Live. It is not expected to use any clips from the show or feature The Stig.
Mr May and Mr Hammond, whose television contracts expired with the BBC [independent.co.uk], have separate contracts with BBC Worldwide to host the live events. Those contracts run until September with live shows already booked in regions as far as Australia and South Africa.

A spokesman said: "So as not to disappoint the thousands of people around the world who have already purchased tickets, BBC Worldwide has agreed with our joint venture partner Brand Events that the remainder of the tour can continue. These events will not however feature any BBC Top Gear branding or content. We believe this is a sensible approach in the circumstances."

The pair are now free agents, meaning rival broadcasters can approach them with job offers.

As for who contacted the police, see the quote below. There were several articles which quoted the police spokesperson, this was the first one that pulled up when I did a search just now.
"No-one who was present at the hotel during the incident came forward to report an offence to the police. Nonetheless, we have a duty to investigate where we believe an offence might have been committed, and that is what we have been doing with this case.
"We have already spoken tosome people who were in the hotel at the time, but there are still others we need to speak to, who could help us to determine exactly what happened.
"Also, as is usual in these circumstances, we have made contact with Mr Tymon through his lawyers, to ask him to speak to us so we can ascertain how he wishes to pursue this matter."

BBC will air material (including Clarkson footage) filmed for the last three episodes but there is not enough for three full episodes.
Clarkson is not banned from working for the BBC and could return.
They are looking for a new presenter for Top Gear, no word on if May and Hammond will return.
Clarkson revealed that two days before the incident he had a cancer scare, but has since been give the all clear.

What surprised me was the Executive Producer of Top Gear, Andy Wilman (he's the one who re-invented the show in 2002) has quit the BBC and come out with a strongly worded denouncement of the BBC and their meddling in the show.

The Gimp?
The Stig was originally going to be called the Gimp?

Finally answered my own question that I've had for years. I've wondered for years what Stig meant but never thought to look it up until I read that bit about The Gimp. Turns out Stig is a Norse boys name which means Wanderer or The Wanderer.
And the whole thing about the BBC pushing him to hire a woman? Because the BBC thinks that's the only way to draw in women viewers?
This woman watches Top Gear with three blokes running the show but very rarely watches the BBC2 show Fifth Gear (two blokes and a woman) because while Fifth Gear has some good car advice, it's a bit of a snooze fest at times.

I'm thinking a Telly Tubby looking Gimp might work in the US show.
Yeah, that's just stupid. You put the people together who will make the show work the best. That doesn't mean the right woman couldn't fit in. If they found one who is really into cars that would also fit in with the corny humor of the show then fine, but they can't just stick a woman in there just to have a woman in the show.
