Shrimp wonton, w/plum sauce, no preservatives for $1.01. I know, why can't it just be $1?? Well, check it out!
The original price was over $11.xx
So Target can sell Easter M&Ms for 50% off the day after Easter, or it can sell them to stashers for 90% once they find them behind the potted palms? Which situation does Target make more money? Selling to regular normal shoppers, or stashers? And wouldn't you like to come to a store for a slick deal, only to find the goods you want have been stashed?
Again, it's not our job as customers to set the prices of merchandise we buy, that's up to the seller. Of course there's a markup in retail, it's how they make money! It's not our place as shoppers to decide how much money Target can make on a product.
at 75% off, retailers are STILL making a profit on their seasonal merchandise. as i said in a previous post, it gets accounted for. because the vendors will not do returns for any unsold seasonal merchandise, it is heavily discounted in their original invoice.
this is why i refuse to buy holiday clearance until it goes lower than that. i happen to think its ridiculous customers feel they're getting such a discounted price when reality is - it's not a discount at all.
at 90%, yes at that point is when retailers start taking a hit. but even at 90%, you still need to factor in other things. if this merchandise is not sold through, what happens? candy expires, which then makes it unsellable and a complete loss. if merchandise is repacked, you risk things getting damaged. you need to pay employees for the extra time it takes to pack it all up. you also need to figure out a place to store it. which becomes an issue of what should we store - everyday merchandise that needs replenishment on a regular basis, or seasonal crap that takes up a lot of space and can't be sold again until the next season? gee.. i wonder about that one. these are things that make it worthwhile to the retailer to clear it out at 90% off.
if there is a lot of stuff left at that point, inventory management should be stepping in to control how much product they get shipped for the next holiday season. (aka, obviously someone over-ordered that year!)
all that being said, i highly doubt enough merchandise is being stashed away to make a significant difference.
however, you are more than welcome to your 50% discount price if that is what makes you happy.
and that orny guy...(lol, not horny...) he is FUNNY!! i checked out his other ones , too. Great stand up.

Now that would be a super slick deal!
Too bad we don't have Stop N Shop around here...
Although, they do have some horridly-named convenience store called "Kum 'N Go," which I think is about the WORST possible moniker for any business located outside of rural Nevada...but then that's OT.

1) The "shame" of couponing. I don't care if strangers see me using coupons, but I live in terror that I'm going to run into one of my students when I'm doing a big order, esp. at our local Walgreens. I'm a college professor at a big state school and we live right by the university so all my local stores are heavily frequented by the students. I did run in to one of my favorite students at Walgreens once, but I didn't have anything too embarrassing in my cart yet,
Once, at Smiths (local Kroger affiliate) I did run into one of the other profs in my department. All I had in my cart was: one case of wine
2) His coupon envie looks *exactly* like the inside of my purse! I have *NO* organization at all,
Thanks for the laugh.
