Star Wars The Force Awakens. SPOILERS.

So what do people think? I thought it was a good movie, but not great. I actually like the final Mockingjay more. It was definitely a good Star Wars movie unlike the crappy 3. It's like a 70's movie made in 2015.

Did Chewy get special credit at the end? I don't remember seeing it. All the main characters got special billing in the ending credits. Peter Mayhew should have since Chewy was on screen way more than Anthony Daniels(C3PO) who did get special billing.

Kids love all kinds of crappy movies, just because you see and enjoy kids reactions doesn't mean you can't as an adult critique a movie in much more detail. Also lots of people pull apart those other movies you mentioned.

As you age and mature you look at all the arts (art, books, movies, etc) more critically and they teach you it in schools to look for deeper meanings, for more context and better understanding. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy simple things or take something at face value, but when things don't make sense to you or you paid good money for a good story and it's not all there, then of course you discuss it and start asking questions.

So we're awfully glad you enjoyed the movie, most of us also saw the fun in it but it certainly didn't fulfill us and on a discussion forum...um....we're happening to discuss it.
Sure....and as part of the discussion, ppl are allowed to disagree and point out why they disagree.Big Grin

And, I'm just saying that it was still an enjoyable film. I feel the arguments why ppl didn't the film was irrational because they didn't understand they point of the film makers. I think the retort that dalokgawd linked states it clearly and on point.

It's like knowing beforehand that Indian food is spicy, going to dine at an Indian joint, and then complaining that it's too spicy and writing a bad review on Yelp about it. We're talking about a sci-fi, fantasy film and ppl are complaining about how some aspects of the film are not possible! LOL.....like jedis, the force, etc are real!?!?! Like how Rey can beat Kylo Ren without much jedi training, why Finn knows X or Y when he's a "janitor" (assuming that First Order stormtroopers who actually fight in battles who say they were in "sanitation" are listed as "janitors", right?), why Han Solo wants to save his son who turned to the dark side?

If you just said you didn't enjoy the film because it wasn't your thing, that's your opinion and I respect that. No point in trying to convince anyone that they should like it. However, if you point out things that you think are irrational, non-sensical, or "plot holes" that may have been made that way for a purpose, it's part of debate and normal conversation to respond to those comments. Right?

I get what you're saying but I also understand "nerd culture" to an extent. These kind of films/stories are worlds that people really get into. People have conventions over them and role playing games and LARPing and really intricate social interactions over. When it's a make believe world though, there still need to be rules and laws that govern the system so that it makes it more believable. Yes, we know things are made up and not real, but if you don't stick to your outline and rules (cannon) then it's really hard to follow story lines as it expands and continue to lose yourself in the world.

This kind of thing becomes a problem when making single stories into sagas. Sure any one of a group of stories can stand on their own and just be good fun adventure and make-believe, but when you're trying to connect the stories together, you have to remember the details that make that world work. Otherwise, it's much easier to get confused and wonder why something a person can do now...someone else couldn't do previously and then you can no longer lose yourself in the story.

That's why people argue over the details. They're trying to make sense of things as it pertains to that world so that they can fully enjoy the story. Most people don't want to hate the stories...they want to love them but it's hard to love and believe in something when things don't make sense.

I think that pretty much sums it up, even for someone like me, who wasn't that into Star Wars before this new movie came along. You have a world of established 'norms', established characters, and established ethics for those characters, then suddenly they throw all of that out the window with no rationalization for ANY of it. Now had there been some amount of character development or story line development, then the movie would have been interesting, but it had none of that.

DH and I at the end of the movie. >>> Huh Huh

Profanity and Star Wars don't mix.

My thought early in the movie was "this will be star wars for the next generation".

Unlike those prequels.

something just dawned on me.

everyone has a theory on who rey is (luke's daughter but who did he sleep with?)

what if.....

rey and ren are twins like luke and leila?

rey....ren.....get it??

it's not that far fetched since everything about this movie closely resembles the past movies.

something to ponder.

I've never read them, but apparently in the books, Han and Leia's kids are the first of the new Jedi. So my first thought was brother and sister. People seemed pretty convinced that she's Luke's daughter from something said in the movie, though. So I dunno.

I never read the books, but one of my friends says the new star wars movie does not follow the same cannon as the extended universe?

Dontknow But unless the reviews for the next movie say that they've redeemed themselves for this train wreck of a movie, I won't be seeing it.

Once burned, twice shy. IF it's great and explains some things and fills in the gaping holes left by this movie, then I might go. At some point the public is going to have its fill of the 'shiny, flashy, fast action movement' in lieu of an actual story line.

Meant to say too, we rarely go to the movies, as DH just doesn't have the time. So we're very selective on which movies we see in the theater, for most movies we wait until it's available for rental.
