Didn't know that F1 had two female drivers compete in races back in the 50's and 70's.

Quote :
Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to compete in a world championship Formula One [theguardian.com] grand prix, has died at the age of 89. The Italian started three grand prix races in a privately entered Maserati 250F, finishing a best place of 10th at Spa-Francorchamps in 1958.

The Naples-born driver had earlier tried to qualify for that year's Monaco Grand Prix, failing in her efforts along with another debutant, the future F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Both were too slow to qualify but there was no cut-off in Belgium, allowing De Filippis to qualify in last place. Nine of the 19 cars then failed to finish, and she crossed the line 10th.

The late Lella Lombardi is the only other woman to start a Formula 1 race, making the grid in 12 grands prix between 1974 and 1976. Britain's Divina Galica, the South African Desire Wilson and the Italian Giovanna Amati have unsuccessfully tried to qualify for the races.

DH just finished watching the qualifying and said it was the dullest qualifying ever. He's been watching F1 for 30+ years.

qualifying was truly awful Mad nobody on track for the final minutes of each session, no additional running by anyone, people knocked out while on hot laps, it was just dumb all the way around nod

part of me was surprised how badly the teams pulled the strategy, I almost wonder if they did that on purpose Dontknow It would seem that most of the teams would be capable of back timing laps to the next elimination time...

it definitely wasn't boring. I'm not sure it was a crazy as the year Button went from last to first in the Canadian GP, Albert Park just doesn't have that many good passing opportunities shake head

That didn't take very long...

Formula 1 bosses have agreed to ditch the controversial new elimination qualifying system for the next race.

The previous system will be re-introduced for the Bahrain Grand Prix on 1-3 April after criticism of the new knock-out format at the season's first race in Australia on Saturday.

The teams made a unanimous decision at a meeting in Melbourne on Sunday.

Formula One will retain the live elimination qualifying format, in full, for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The derided change to qualifying had a farcical debut in Australia, with team bosses agreeing to scrap the new system for the second race in Bahrain. However, Thursday's meeting of the Strategy Group failed to reach the unanimous agreement required for a rule change....

You know, it's a pretty screwed up system when you find yourself agreeing with Bernie.

Did you read the open letter that the drivers issued yesterday? I agree with everything they said.

"I don't think we have to have an Italian Grand Prix," misguided elf-king of Formula One and infinitely wrong man Bernie Ecclestone told The Daily Mail [thisismoney.co.uk]. Tifosi, it's time to get out those pitch forks and torches. Monza—historic wonderland and Ferrari's home race Monza—could be replaced by Las Vegas.

Ecclestone told The Daily Mail that the organizers for a new grand prix in Las Vegas already have a contract with F1. However, he explained that they're not looking to add any more races to the schedule, so one will have to move:

Fernando Alonso [bleacherreport.com] will miss a Formula One race for the second season in succession after being ruled out of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The two-time world champion survived one of the most spectacular accidents of modern times at the recent Australian GP, but despite walking away from the wreckage of his McLaren-Honda, the Spaniard has been declared unfit to compete at the Sakhir circuit.

One driver's disappointment is another's opportunity, however, and Alonso's absence will see the highly rated Stoffel Vandoorne make his long-awaited F1 debut in Bahrain.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and FIA president Jean Todt presented the new aggregate times system to F1 teams on Sunday as they refuse to go back to the 2015 format.

Under the aggregate system, drivers' grid positions would be based on their two best laps in each qualifying session.

"It's time to go to the circus," Vettel told Sky when asked about the proposed new system.

"It's a good idea if you want random things to happen, but Formula 1 should be about racing. It's a s*** idea."

If the system gets approved, it would not be the first time Formula 1 has had an aggregate qualifying format, however.

Back in 2005, the grid was decided by aggregating the times from two single-lap runs, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.

The system was ditched after six races, however.

It's about time! I wonder what they will attempt to screw up next?

Common sense finally—finally—prevailed in the Formula One qualifying saga this week. Unfortunately, it took a near-unprecedented showing of team unity to force the FIA's and Formula One Management's hands, so don't hold your breath waiting for that common sense to spill over into other decisions regarding the future of the sport.

On Thursday, after receiving a unanimous letter from the teams, the FIA and FOM issued a joint statement [fia.com] acquiescing to their demands and announcing a return to the qualifying format used in 2015.
