Google Express incorrect sales tax beware.

667 120 January 11, 2016 at 07:31 AM
Hey guys, I just noticed that Google express is charging incorrect sales tax. They are charging the sales tax of the origin (location of warehouse) instead of the delivery address.

For instance I live in MI and I ordered some stuff worth $200 they should be collecting 6% (MI sales tax) i.e. $12.00 but instead since the item shipped from some place in IL which has 10% sales tax they charged me about $20.00 in taxes. Their support is completely useless regarding this issue.

The way I see they should either be collecting the sales tax of the destination which is what most sites do, or collect no sales tax and leave it up to the buyer to pay taxes.

What do you think?

Talk to Google. I'm sure it's #1 on their priority list! Smilie

Yeah I spoke to them. You would think a multi billion dollar company would have thought of these things in advance.

The bigger issue is they are also charging bottle deposits the same way. It is actually illegal to deposit out of state bottles in MI. I know it is not a big deal but how did they overlook such basic rules.

My guess is they will get away from any legal prosecution by simply claiming that they are just a "delivery service" and not online sellers.

This is the response from Google

"Your items come from stores located in the Chicago area, which might have a different tax rate than your neighborhood.

Though the tax may be different, I can confirm Google Express has no hidden mark-ups. You'll be charged the same price, including any sales tax or fees, as you would if you were shopping in the store yourself.

Google Express has your order processed in the store and arrange for a driver to bring it to you, this is why you are paying the sales tax for IL.

I believe this is a common issue with Google Express. You should be charged the correct tax once the order is processed. I have had a similar issue and was charged the correct amount once the order was processed and shipped.

Yes that is what I assumed, but they are charging IL taxes for all orders to MI. They did not fix the taxes.

Is that what you're seeing on your receipt or your order confirmation? My order confirmation always estimates really high on tax but it's always correct on the receipt. In fact, I'm in Illinois and half the time I'm charged less than if I had gone to the store.

EDITED to add: I saw your reply from GE and I understand why they're doing it. They're set up as if they're personal shoppers it seems so it's the same as if you went and got yourself it seems. Kinda stinks though.
