I know everyone makes their choices...but I tend to side a little more with smrtshppr here...I know several single mothers that are able to stay at home with their children due to all of the government assistance they get while I have to go out and work 40 hours a week and sometimes it's really frusterating b/c they live better than I do!!! At times I envy some of my single mother friends b/c they live at home with mom and dad who are built in babysitters and they still get to go out and pretty much do what they want. I was talking to one the other night and she didn't feel that going out 3-4 times a week was a lot....like I said even though she's a single mom she still gets to go out and do what she wants. Obviously I understand this isn't the case for a lot of people and I admire the women doing it all on their own, but sometimes raising kids with two parents is just as hard!!

ok....happy things so fedex knocked on my door today and guess freakin what??? I actually got that breeze littler system that everyone may have signed up for a couple of weeks ago!!!!

I never got help, and you know what Jen they have changed the rules in our state since I was a single mom. When I was a single mom you couldn't have a car newer than 5 years old for instance. Not a rule anymore. I didn't realize my comments on being a single mom, got so much attention. When I was a single mom I always made more than the system allowed for any type of help and I only made $8 an hour working 33 hours a week when my husband and I separated. I had to go to college and get a better job, not collect any type of benefits to get help.

I also know people who have played the system, not just single moms, married couples as well and even men. It is easy to do if you get a job working under the table, easy for a man in our state, or you have a live in boyfriend as a woman and don't work (as long as your kids are under a certain age!) As a woman you could also waitress or bartend and claim less in earnings. I was ticked when I was a single mom working in an accounting firm, and couldn't get any help and one of my friends who was married (with a husband working for cash) could collect food stamps, and many other benefits. Powell Terrace ever heard of that in our area? Yeah I know a lot of people who played the system from there, so I believe I know what you are talking about!

On the other hand, I also know plenty of single moms like me who I went to college with who busted their butt to get ahead like I did.

Powell Terrace lol...i live on the very outskirts of powell terrace. It's better than living in North County (where we lived before) and it's what we can afford right now. It's a cute little duplex (and I do mean little lol) and the rent is within our budget. It is just so frusterating I just got home from work and even if I went to sleep right this second...I would still have to sleep till 11 to get a good's night sleep which takes away from time with dd. My mom was a single mom as well, never got food stamps and government assistance and I have so much respect for single moms that do this, I just can't stand people that use and abuse the system.

So dh and his ex have two kids, the youngest is getting to the age where all of her assistance is going to be cut off if she doesn't get a job.....so about two months ago she asked MY dh for a "donation" so she could have another kid...I about flipped out when dh told me that.

Powell terrace isn't the best neighborhood, there have been shootings in the past, so be careful.

Holy crap, you have scared the bejeezus out of me lol. We have lived here since feb. of last year and the only problem we have really had is dh was outside smoking one night and got all mad b/c some kid was peeing out in front of our house and he yelled at them lol.

I work in the mills mall and I honestly feel so much unsafe there than I ever do at home. We have a lot of older people as neighbors and families. I'm sure if you go about 6 blocks back it's much worse than the area we are in. Dh wants to move out to like farmington...he's tired of city life, I'm tending to agree with him.

I moved here when I was 21 and ended up getting an apt in bellfontaine neighbors...I just didn't know any better and that was horrible.

I'm sorry I don't want to scare you, but I believe you should play it safe in that area, and have the information. I sure would want to know. Are things any better now, do you know? I think the rents in the area, all the area are ridiculous, many are much higher than our house payment. I have a girlfriend who rented a trailer in O'Fallon, Fairview Manor, and she paid more rent a month than we pay for our house. I don't know how anyone can make it if they rent. If you want to live in St. Peters or O'Fallon in a house for rent, what would you pay at least $1,500 a month rent for a small house if not much more for a bigger house. I have seen rents for as high as $3,500 a month.

We always had damn peepers! I see that hasn't changed. Oh ha I see you said peeing not peeping. I would be mad about that to.

Plus you are on the outskirts, so you are in a safer area, in the heart of Powell Terrace is where danger is. When I lived there 16 or 17 years ago cops were even afraid of the area from my understanding. I was just a kid myself practically, and grew up in a safe city, so it was quite shocking. Truth was sometimes the cops were called and they didn't come, they based their decision to come on the problem.

I Think things have gotten somewhat better. There is def. a big police presence. During the summer there is a cop that rides around on a horse lol, and I see one just patroling almost everytime I pull in or out of our neighborhood. I don't see a lot of gang activity at all. My sil lives a block over and she swears her neighbors are drug dealers, but she is also the type of person that looooooves drama and can create drama out of anything.

Believe your sister in law, I wouldn't be surprised. Almost every other home had drug dealers when I lived there. Just watch the traffic, you will see what I mean. I saw it all, I grew up way to fast out there!

Update, my current husband who has lived in O'Fallon his whole life (till we moved to the country), says he is certain Powell Terrace is not as bad as it used to be, but it is always safe to use caution in the area. He also agrees with you that the Police patrol the area much better then they did when I lived there, but still says there is still much drug traffic in the area. Also if you live on streets like Sunset or even Gary Drive if I remember street names correctly, these days you are a bit safer.

A couple to add to Stormy's list of toys for tots:

His favorite toy is the playskook gear toy, busy gears.About 16.99 at TRU. He's had it since 8 months, now 16 months. It's been great to watch him grow with it. Gears are always everywhere in our house.

He also loves building with megablocks. We have soft blocks as well by IQ baby but him and his dad build/destroy stuff with megabloks all the time. I know they're not as good as the lego version but I think they are just fine for babies.

He's had the vtech laptop for a while now, it has a couple of different modes. I thought it was boring when we first bought it but he plays with it every morning.

I'm iffy on the vtech driver. We've had it for about 6 months. The statements it makes are a bit rude but he likes honking the horn, etc so we kept it

He loves the santa fe express ride on train. We got it at WM for 75% off after christmas, he just loves it. We make him tunnels and he rides through them. He reaches out for toys and stuff as he goes by. So much fun.

Little tikes/step2 outdoor stuff. We have a yard. He loves the step2 sandtable. We don't like the little tikes water table, too boring

Don't get:

Fisher price CD player-how boring, it's a joke. He played with it for like 2 days
playskool toy that rolls with a bunch of dogs on it. maybe for a 3 month old who does nothing all day but to label this 6 months+ is crazy

I didn't know it existed when I bought my wagon, I used the $10 06 one. How many wagons could you need?

I don't know on the 05's. I probably wouldn't use it without a wagon. there are so many ways to get overage these days, not worth the potential hassle. Especially at your stores where they're looking for an excuse to get you

i called the local newspaper up in minneapolis and simply asked what happens to the extra coupon inserts. she said oh. they get recycled. i was like oh. is there a way to get like a handful of each? and she said no thats unethical.

oh well. guess I asked the wrong question to the wrong person!

did you ever try asking at your local 7 - 11 or WaWa if you can have the leftover inserts from the papers that did not sell? i go every Sunday night after 12 or early Monday morning and they let me have them if they have any left. Most weeks i can easily get 5-10 extras. Last week on my birthday i actually got 20!
