O.M.G. has anyone ever had shingles on their roof?

So, when I realized that the leak in my roof was accompanied by holes in what appears to be some kind of roofing material. I immediately called my general contractor and got him to come look at my roof this afternoon. Now I have to call in a roofing specialist tomorrow. I get holes in my siding all the time, but never on my roof.
Guess I broke the rules, but not as bad as not reporting in from the contractor's van on the 4th
