Meet Lewis

He's the newest addition to our family. We adopted him this weekend from the animal shelter and picked him up from the vet today after getting fixed.

He's a rat terrier mix of some kind. About 25 pounds, and he needs a bit of weight on him so he'll probably end up about 30ish or so. He's incredibly friendly and sooper smart.

He's very sweet, loves attention, very affectionate, loves our Hooligans, and is going to fit in very well in our family.

He hasn't made a peep since we've met him. I'm not sure if he knows how to bark at all, actually.

So cute. I'm sure once Lewis adjusts to his forever home, he'll start barking. The trick will be to get him to stop.
Eh. My dog doesn't bark unless he's at the park or there is a perceived serious threat (which is exceedingly rare). I adopted him when he was 2 y/o. YMMV.

My cat growls whenever someone approaches the front door. He's our early warning system. He's a shelter kitty, had just been picked up off the streets, so no history on him but he must have been hanging out with some dogs at some point. He also likes to play fetch with a catnip filled ball. Crazy

I was trying to make a Shrek/Donkey reference/joke. I see now it was an ill-conceived attempt.

Comfort It's okay. Lots of old people have trouble with their hearing.

laugh out loud It was funny one of the first times she did bark was in the office about 5 years ago... no one else had heard her make a peep before and she barked at some dog walking past on a leach (there was a steak bone in the garbage inside the office laugh out loud) and she gave this old croaky bark... people came out of their offices to see what the noise was and shocked it was Bea.

One of our dogs (Japanese Chin) rarely barks - she only barks when the other one barks (he makes up for her lack of barking). We had her several weeks as a puppy before we heard her bark - she looked surprised when she heard herself bark.

So Lewis went to the vet today for a wellness visit and to start establishing a history, and the vet says that based on his gait, coat, demeanor, and especially his teeth, he estimate Lewis to be about 9 months old.

He also says that Lewis is likely a Terrier/Whippet mix of some sort, maybe with lab thrown in somewhere down the line, but that's somewhat unlikely given his small size and the fact that he doesn't like to chew on stuff.

He was weighed today at 24lbs even, and the vet says that he'll likely top out at about 30lbs as a healthy weight.

He got the cone of shame today to help him stop licking his surgery wound, and the poor dog looks pretty pathetic with the cone on.

I bought one of those ropes with a ball on the end of it to play tug-of-war with him, and after a rather furious session this evening I got an ever-so-slight grumble/growl out of him. It was barely audible.

The vet says he may some day find his voice, or he may not. Dontknow

Regardless, he's a pretty amazing little guy for such a small dog. heart
