Transporting Laptop and Mouse within Office

291 July 21, 2016 at 09:13 AM Amazon
Okay, this may seem silly at first glance but I'd really appreciate constructive suggestions.

I'm seeking ideas for streamlining the carrying of my laptop and accessories (mouse) to the many daily meetings within my office. Due to a nerve condition, I must use an external mouse. Women's clothes often don't have pockets - add cell phone to the mix. Even within my floor, I'll need to use badge access - so get one hand free for a moment.

I always seem to be dropping my mouse. It's just an awkward size/shape item to cart around.

To actually pack everything up in a laptop bag seems overkill when I'm walking 50 feet for a 15 minute meeting. (Lay flat, unzip, shift permanently stored accessories out of the way, add items, re-zip. Arrive at table, upack....)
  • Is there a mouse that physically attaches to the laptop for transport?
  • Is there any kind of small pouch that could be connected to my laptop to hold the mouse (just for in office, not when packed away, so protruding wouldn't matter.)
  • My fallback would be maybe getting a slim, open tote bag. But something that doesn't look like I'm traveling with luggage or carrying a grocery sack, especially when just going to a colleague's desk.

I've been searching and discovered a no-longer-sold Logitec mouse that had a clip-and-go feature and cool looking "clip mouse [yankodesign.com]" that got some press a few years ago, but doesn't seem to exist now. I'm considering a Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse [amazon.com] which flattens out. At least it would be a better shape for carrying.

Thanks!

just use your laptop touchpad for said 15min?

--edit: before someone says did you read the nerve condition comment. yes, i read the nerve condition part. but they are just as "ergonomic" in use as a mouse next to the laptop. if anything was to be more difficult to use with nerve damage, would be the non-ergonomic tiny a$$ keyboard on the laptop itself.

I appreciate the thought, but my situation is truly about asking for suggestions when using traditionally shaped external mouse. That is what works best for me.

And the 15 minutes was merely one example, emphasizing the absurdity of packing everything up and unpacking. The keyboard can definitely be a problem for me - especially if used very long, but the nature of my meetings is that we are generally reviewing material/websites, not so much typing. It's not as if I'm taking minutes or writing code. Light keyboard use. So the mouse (point and click) is more important.

depending on the shape of your laptop, could you place a non-stick pad (something like this [amazon.com]) on the back of the lid and put your mouse there while you walk? that would give it a semi-stable place for it to sit while you walk, giving you a free hand for badge access and door opening.

if attached permanently, it might make it a bit of a pain to take the laptop in/out of a snug case, but it would at least help in the office.

I'd say go with a laptop sleeve that has some kind of storage for your mouse.

Since I have no idea what laptop you use:

E.g.
https://www.amazon.com/urlhasbeen...55&sr=1-11
https://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic...55&sr=1-15

Oh, and I used the Arc mouse for a bit.. It wasn't bad. Since you have nerve problems, you'll definitely want to try it out first, but it would work really well with a small sleeve that has a pocket for phone/slim mouse.

I was thinking just finding a small bag with a strap, slide strap over monitor down to the point where the pivot is and make sure it's snug, let the bag hang off the back (i.e. something like this [amazon.com]). When traveling close the laptop throw crap into the bag. As long as the laptop isn't facing where the opening action is down the bag/strap should remain in place.

The MS Arc mouse is small and lightweight and folds in half, so it's comfortable to hold, much more so than traditional mouses. There's also the MS Arc Touch, which flattens out rather than folding, it would be really easy to carry but it's not as ergonomic when being used as the regular Arc is.

Switch to a touchscreen laptop.
Switch to a pad and pen - the usb type I dont know the name but i've seen artists use them for drawing.

I'm guessing you never were a waitress and learned the fine art of stacking everything on one arm? Smilie

I was thinking about Velcro...put the soft fuzzy side on the bottom of the mouse - not blocking the laser and the rough half on the lid of the laptop.

The Velcro should hold it fine for the stroll to the Conference Room.

Plus the soft velcro will help the mouse move smoothly across the table. Good call.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-C...B001DJ7Y2O I believe there are other models also I have seen. I actually beta tested this before it was on the market and it does help a lot. You stick the button thing on the laptop and clip the mouse onto it.
Sounds like it might be something good for you. Smilie

EDIT: Omg that 3rd party wants $300 EEK! But thats something you may look for, obviously not that seller though.

Looks like they dont make it anymore, so probably wont find it. That's too bad, was a neat idea. Frown

Thanks, all! Your responses have been both helpful and entertaining.

Equipment is office-issued. I could buy my own mouse, but the existing laptop is a requirement.

Today I had to go into my "big boss's" office for a quick meeting. Laptop, mouse, pen, printout, coffee cup.

Entered the room, dropped the mouse. Went to pick up the mouse, dropped the papers.. At least it made me come back and check this thread!

I'll try some of your suggestions.
