Athletes at Rio Olympics 'will literally be swimming in human crap'

http://www.cbssports.com/olympics...uman-crap/

Seven years ago the Rio de Janeiro government promised to clean up the water before the 2016 Olympics.
Not only did they fail to clean it up -- it has actually gotten worse.
According to the New York Times, recent tests by government and independent scientists have found the city's waters to be full of diarrhea-causing rotaviruses and drug-resistant "super bacteria," among other pathogens.
This is the same water in which Olympians will sail, windsurf and -- yes -- swim starting on Aug. 5.
"Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms," local pediatrician Dr. Daniel Becker told the Times. "It's sad, but also worrisome."

yet another reason why they should just have 2-3 cities for each the summer and winter games and rotate. Then all you have to do is perhaps refurb the facilities every 6-10 years. SO much money and effort saved.

not sure if they would even have to "refurb" the facilities. a lot of them after being constructed go on to be used for many years to come. the toboggan run at Salt Lake City, Utah at the Utah Olympic Park sells rides to the general public (although slowed down from the original speeds that olympians raced at). the ice arenas opened at the Toronto games are still open and used to play hockey by numerous Canadian teams.

The problem with that is a lot of the buildings are re-purposed for other uses, so they might not be available for reuse as an Olympic village. The countries who build them have to reuse them or sell them off in order to be able to afford hosting the Olympics in the first place.

the best thing Rio could do at this point is to start pumping freshly baked cookies, bread and pizza into the air.

Grilled meat would also be a positive.

Regardless, shallow breaths should be encouraged if visiting.

Australian athletes 'robbed' during fire evacuation

*snip*

Australian Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller, who has had to deal with her team's discontent, said a laptop and Zika-protective team shirts had been stolen by people who entered the building during the evacuation.

*snip*

Approximately 100 athletes were evacuated Friday after a small fire broke out in the basement car park of the Olympic Village apartments housing the Australian team.

The Australian team were equally annoyed that the fire alarms had been deactivated in their building, which meant veteran shooter Warren Potent actually slept through the entire evacuation.

"Obviously that is completely unacceptable that (a) the fire alarm was disabled and (b) that if it had to be, that we weren't warned about that," she said.

Just yesterday, he says he was kidnapped by men dressed as policemen, and was forced to go to ATMs with them to withdraw money. He wrote on Facebook, "I was threatened with arrest if I did not get in their private car and accompany them to two ATMs to withdraw a large sum of money for a bribe.

With just 36 days to go before the Rio Olympics [cnn.com] kick off, the situation in the host city just went from bad to worse.

A beach goer Wednesday discovered human body parts that had washed up on the shore, right in front of the Olympic Beach Volleyball Arena on Rio's famed Copacabana beach.

A dismembered foot and another body part still unidentified was found, according to Andre Luiz, an officer of the Military Police. Police believe the victim was a woman or young adult.
