I need a little advice. I'm too intimidated by The Lounge people to actually make a thread, so I figured I'd ask you Targeters.
My grandmother lives in one of those gated communities with a HOA and all that fancy stuff. We go there a lot because it's just down the street and because her community has a nice big communal gym we like to use.
Anyway, we got a nice visit from the HOA president today who tracked the car tag back to our house. At this point, I didn't know that my brother had done what he did, so I just told the guy that I'd pass the message along and that I didn't know anything about it. He seemed to not like this answer and threatened me, getting angry and telling me that if he files a claim with the insurance, the insurance would ask for a police report, and he didn't have that and if we didn't pay $300 to fix the gate that he would get the police and that we would be arrested.
The thing is, the gate is really two long horizontal poles that go up to open and come down to close. For the longest time, the left pole has ALWAYS stayed down - basically it's been broken/non-functioning for a long time now. My brother apparently messed with this side. It didn't break - no crack, it's not in two parts, nothing, it just fell out of the socket that holds it in. So what is there to fix for $300? And can he really do what he claims to do? I mean, I'm not saying that what my brother did was right - obviously if he broke it, he should fix it - but it almost feels like the HOA guy is being a little ridculous. It seems like he's just trying to extort us or something. My brother said he'd go over there and stick the thing back in, but it seems like, considering the circumstances, there isn't anything that needs repair for that much money. I even went to my grandmother's house this morning (to use the gym, LOL) and the gate pole was already placed back in! You wouldn't have known the thing was even messed with. AND the gate still didn't go up when you opened it.
Any advice? :]
