Best Laminate Wood Floor Sweeper/Vacuum/Mop?

1,410 913 October 20, 2016 at 05:42 AM
We will be getting some laminate wood floors soon...I've never had them so don't know how to care for them. Right now we have a cordless battery vacuum for the tiled area, and a spray mop/Swiffer type setup. Will something like that be okay for the laminate wood? We have little kids, so there's stuff spilt and messes everyday it seems. So just a dry duster/vacuum doesn't cut it all the time.

What should I use to avoid damage or scratching of the laminate?

I use something similar to this [amazon.com](but older model) for anything hard surface (tile and hardwood floor mostly). We have 3 and 7 yo. This machine cleans the floor better than you ever could with a mop or rag - it has separate clean and dirty solution tanks, and integrated oscillating scrubbers on the bottom. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

I put about the cheapest laminate floor I could get in for my mom about 10 years ago. She's 80 now, can't sweep or anything. I got her a Neato. Works great, and gets 99.9% of visible dirt. Transitions well over area rugs. They aren't super reliable (old one lasted about 3 years), batteries fail (I wanted lithium ion but not for the price, when the originals die in her new Neato, I'll look at them for replacements). I usually don't go for extended warranties, but I would in this case (at least a credit card adds a year). Living in an agricultural area, the floor sees worse "dirt" than typical town folks see. Of course spills and wet stuff would need wiped up first. Of course they aren't cheap. I prefer them over a Roomba. In addition to that, I got a Hoover spin scrub whatever thing similar to what's been mentioned, I go over it every once in a while. Floor cleans up to nearly new looking, minimal scratches (none from cleaning).

Sweet, thanks for the recommendations everyone. Would something like a Swiffer wet jet suffice? I'm worried about putting down to much water from the hoover type cleaners.

with laminate? I use it on plain ol' hardwood with zero issues. It lays down the solution then sucks it right back up.

The issue is with liquid soaking in between the joints of the planks causing the planks to swell up.

In 10 years of using that type of cleaner occasionally, I see no issues at all with the cheap laminate I got. I would not let it put down "a lot" of liquid, and immediately clean it up (no standing puddles).

That said, I have no idea if others have had issues with it, I've only been around this laminate I installed.

Right...if your kid spills their full glass of milk on the floor, you don't let it sit there, you soak it up with a towel, etc...and swifter it to remove any stickiness.

Incidentally, we are in the process of putting down laminate flooring for the whole house. EVERY room will have it. So this thread is timely.

We have some rooms that have it already, but buying it at Costco/Sam's made it impossible to get the same kind/style/color a year later and so those room are as close as we could find, but they are not the same flooring.
