What's the nicest thing a complete stranger has done for you? (for free?)

DW, the kids and I were at a local restaurant tonight - just a normal night with the kids. The couple behind us left (middle-aged, not necessarily old) and said "you have a beautiful family, you're very blessed" on the way out. We thanked them for the compliment and thought that was it.

About 5 min later, well after the couple left, 2 waitresses came over saying that the couple had paid our bill in full including tip and assumed we had known them. They were amazed that a complete stranger would buy a meal for someone else; it was probably worth about $60 if I had to guess.

I've had people buy me coffee in line @ DD before (few $$) but this was far and above those.

I've had my coffee paid for by the car ahead of me in the drive thru a few times, but that's about it. What a great feeling when something like that happens.

I had a flat tire one night and it was pouring down rain. It happened on a particularly dark stretch of road about a mile from the nearest phone and cell phones were a thing of the future. An elderly lady pulled up behind me and told me that she hoped I understood why she wouldn't get out of her car, but that she would stay and shine her lights on me while I finished changing my tire. It made a world of difference in how quickly I was able to get back on the road.

Let me shoot a suppressed gun.

Unrelated, but another guy let me touch the bullet that was sticking in his arm.

Well no one has done it for me but I did pay for a woman's gas ontime who told me she had no money and need to get to drug store to get a prescription. I think it was about 10 bucks, then I saw her in the supermarket trying to get the script and there had been a mess up and it was not paid for by insurance. I paid the 20 bucks and she was very grateful.

This seems to be a Holiday tradition of sorts. I seem to remember that this is a common thing that folks post about in December.

My car caught fire (wire shorted out) on a road trip, a really nice older couple stopped and put out the fire with an extinguisher they had in their truck. They then took me to the nearest town, even though it was out of their way and they refused to take money from me for the cost of the extinguisher and the extra gas they used up getting me to town.

Put it out into the world and you'll get good karma back. I just recently spent an hour getting one of the better quality freebies for a store employee who really wanted one. He'd been giving me extra promo tickets for a store freebie and loaned me money when I was short on cash one night. The look on his face when I handed him the gift was priceless.

Other employees have cleaned up my wounds when I've fallen on icy sidewalks, hugged me, listened to my problems, etc... We need to not be complete strangers. We need stronger and healthier communities.

My parents do that every once in a while, usually for younger couples that they can tell are on a first date/early date. Occasionally they do it for families that have really well behaved kids, but mostly for couples. Every once in a while I'll pay for someone behind me at DD or similar.

My wife gets random free stuff at stores ever since we've had a baby, probably helps that the baby is amazingly cute and well-behaved.

Mine would also have to be gun-related, a guy I met and paid for machine work let me shoot a bunch of his Class 3 stuff, wouldn't take $$ for ammo.

All that Class 3 stuff is like drinking or driving a car. It sounds cool and you can't wait to do it, then when you turn old enough to do it a few years later you're like "meh."
The thing I want to do is drive a tank. You can do it for a few thousand up in Michigan or Minnesota. Guy will even let you drive it through a trailer.

He needed a tent to sleep in, OK?! Mad

Lots of nice things, but most recently I was at Subway and the gift card I was attempting to use would not work. The man behind me offered to pay for my meal. It made me glad that he would be so nice, but the cashier got my card to work so he didn't need to buy lunch for me. I told him how much I appreciated his offer and I was able to "pay it forward" the next day by buying lunch for a stranger.

I remembered a couple. The cashier at Chipotle didn't make me pay for my order (under $20), that was nice I thought. That was last week.

Also, I was once given a free First Class upgrade on a flight from BOS to LAX. I proceeded to do what I always do, approach the counter and ask as nicely as possible if there were any available emergency exit row seats. There weren't any on this particular flight so the agent apologized and I was very kind about the whole thing. After all, they are helping me out by checking. Right before we boarded, the same agent came over and said, "You were so friendly and polite while asking, I thought I would give you some new seats" and we were in the front row of first class! We ended up on the plane for almost 2 hours before taking off as well, not sure why but it was a nice flight considering I get quite a bit of anxiety on airplanes.
