What's the nicest thing a complete stranger has done for you? (for free?)

DW, the kids and I were at a local restaurant tonight - just a normal night with the kids. The couple behind us left (middle-aged, not necessarily old) and said "you have a beautiful family, you're very blessed" on the way out. We thanked them for the compliment and thought that was it.

About 5 min later, well after the couple left, 2 waitresses came over saying that the couple had paid our bill in full including tip and assumed we had known them. They were amazed that a complete stranger would buy a meal for someone else; it was probably worth about $60 if I had to guess.

I've had people buy me coffee in line @ DD before (few $$) but this was far and above those.

I had a flat tire one night and it was pouring down rain. It happened on a particularly dark stretch of road about a mile from the nearest phone and cell phones were a thing of the future. An elderly lady pulled up behind me and told me that she hoped I understood why she wouldn't get out of her car, but that she would stay and shine her lights on me while I finished changing my tire. It made a world of difference in how quickly I was able to get back on the road.

My car caught fire (wire shorted out) on a road trip, a really nice older couple stopped and put out the fire with an extinguisher they had in their truck. They then took me to the nearest town, even though it was out of their way and they refused to take money from me for the cost of the extinguisher and the extra gas they used up getting me to town.

I remembered a couple. The cashier at Chipotle didn't make me pay for my order (under $20), that was nice I thought. That was last week.

Also, I was once given a free First Class upgrade on a flight from BOS to LAX. I proceeded to do what I always do, approach the counter and ask as nicely as possible if there were any available emergency exit row seats. There weren't any on this particular flight so the agent apologized and I was very kind about the whole thing. After all, they are helping me out by checking. Right before we boarded, the same agent came over and said, "You were so friendly and polite while asking, I thought I would give you some new seats" and we were in the front row of first class! We ended up on the plane for almost 2 hours before taking off as well, not sure why but it was a nice flight considering I get quite a bit of anxiety on airplanes.
Now that was very cool. nod

I cant think of anything off the top of my head. The nicest thing people rarely do anymore is hold the door open for someone. Ive stopped holding the door open years ago. Ill let it slam right in the face of a prego women. This is the world we now live in folks. Get used to it. Cells phones out...heads down!!

I was moving to the midwest from san diego and had a penske truck with all my junk in it and hauling my car behind it. I'd stopped in Albuquerque to get some rest and hopefully score some blue. I pulled into the hotel parking lot and trying to go around the building but it was a dead end.
I had to turn around but, dammit jim, I'm an eningeer not a truck driver. Every little turn of the wheel that I made only made things worse. I was damn near backed into a fence and the car was about to pop off the hitch. Some guy was watching me from a balcony having a smoke and a hearty laugh and offered to help. Came down and got me out of the jam. My car had to come off and get back on to be straightened (but it blew the rear main seal the friggin night before)...by pushing it back up. The guy was a champ and I offered him money for the help but he refused.
Seriously if nobody helped me, I'd probably still be in that parking lot or on the run from having to burn the truck to the ground, hoping to start a new life in costa rica

on the flip side I was at chipotle on sunday, taking a break from shopping and errands and a police officer came in to get some food. I was sitting close to the register and when the cashier had the audacity to ask for money from the police officer and he started to reach for his wallet, I underhanded a wadded up $10 to the cashier and told him not to take that officer's money Wink

doin good things for random people feels good man. I'd rather give money directly to people who need/deserve it than to a charity where most of it gets wasted anyway, even if there is a tax break.

A lady paid for my drink and muffin the other day. People always hold doors. I've had random people do other nice things with helping me but I can't remember all of them.

My husband and I paid for a family's dinner once because the kids were so awesome and helping the wait staff with cleaning up.

When the thug on the corner was robbing me, he let me keep my sneakers so I didn't have to walk home barefoot!

Sadwalk <-- that would've hurt.
