The intent of this thread is for users, both new and not-so-new, to ask questions, and help with tips/advice. This is not by any means the "gospel". Please feel free to add your words of wisdom, and if you have questions, just ask! If you have a tip that will make sweeping easier for folks, please feel free to share. This is a community effort. We all will benefit in some way.

The Basic Advice/Tips for the new-to-sweeping folks.
Enter for the items you want/need. If you have no interest in trips, avoid the sweeps where the only prize is a trip. If you know you can't afford the tax on a new vehicle, avoid entering for those.

Set up folders in your bookmark/favorites. Create a separate one for each month, and file any sweeps you are interested in into the folder corresponding with when it ends. Then, if you have a day where you're pressed for time, enter at least the ones ending that day.

Play the instant win games.

Follow the rules! If a sweep is restricted to only females, a certain age group, certain states, etc, make sure you fit the criteria! If you don't, move on to another sweep that you do qualify for. Do not create a bunch of email addresses so you can enter something more than once, or so you can play an Instant win game more. The Sponsors can tell, and will DQ you. You're better off playing by the rules than cheating and getting disqualified and having NO entries.

Don't immediately dismiss essay required sweeps (or recipes, photos, etc)....well, unless you know you don't want to write something. A lot of people pass on them, so you might have a better shot at winning something.

Don't expect this to be lucrative enough to become a job. Yes, a lot of us win, and often, but not nearly enough to quit a job!

Expect things to go slow at first. It takes a while for the wins to roll in. But once they do...look out!

Expect to occasionally hit a dry spell. It happens to ALL of us.

DEFINITELY USE YOUR REAL INFO! If you use a fake phone number, and a sponsor is calling to notify people of wins, you'll never know what you missed out on. I, and many others, have been doing this for a long time, and we have no problems with sales calls. Also, use your real name. If your name is Robert or Catherine, using Bob or Cathy is ok, as they are known acceptable shorter versions of that name. if your name is Matilda, and you go by Fluffy, don't use Fluffy. Looking at your ID to get an affy notarized, they may reject it because the names don't match. The sponsor may also say "Fluffy won, not Matilda". So stick with using your real name, or something close to it.

Most of all, HAVE FUN! And don't be afraid to ask questions. We were all new to this at one time. Any one of us would be happy to answer questions.

For easy form filling, check out Roboform [roboform.com]. Google Tool bar and the autofill feature on IE also work well.

For Mac users, the best form filler is 1Password: http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password (thanks javaFlower!)

FireFox Form Filler browser extensions: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/...ll&cat=all

To set up the autofill feature in IE: Click on Tools, then internet options, then choose 'content'. When that pops up, click on "Autocomplete", and make sure to check the boxes for forms and passwords on forms. This is not a good idea if you are on a shared/public computer!

I posted a contest today that was deleted somehow and I didn't have any notifications about it. Do you know why that would be?

Was it a retailmenot contest? I think they all get deleted because they are slickdeals competitors.

Ahhh I bet that's why. Yes, it is a website that posts coupon codes, etc. That makes sense then. I felt like I followed the rules and it was not a repost. I'll be more careful about that next time.

I was wondering about that. I entered the contest, went to rep you, and got an error. I refreshed the page and it was gone.

Ever get a shortened bitly link announcing a contest or that you have won?
And you would like to know whether the site is legit or loaded with malware.

Expand the shortened link with this website without having to go to it yourself http://www.getlinkinfo.com/

Will give you insights without have to open the site?

Hi everyone. I'm new here. I'm looking for any advice if you have any. Here's the situation-

I was emailed by an @hearst.com email on Jan 8th at 12:06 pm Pacific saying "congratulations you won the Elie Tahari gift card" it also said to reply with my address and fill out the attached affidavit within 15 days.

I'm posting this from my phone so can't link the contest but its the $1000 Elie Tahari gift card sweep from Elle magazine.

Ok, so, I replied to her congratulations email within 6 hours, at 5:45 pm Pacific on Jan 8th and supplied my address and told her that she must have forgotten to attach the affidavit because there was none attached.

I did not receive a reply so I emailed her again today Jan 10th at 1:31 pm Pacific and asked again about the affidavit. She replied 2 minutes later saying "
Unfortunately there was another winner before you and his email response was received before yours. It is first come first serve. I apologize for the misunderstanding".

Now to me that seems not right and shady. I mean I replied to there initial contact within 6 hours and the email said I had 15 days. Further, I looked at the official rules and in there it says you have 7 days from Initial contact. Any advice? Thanks much.

Ok as I was writing the above, she replied again and said "it seems as if someone else was handling this before me. I'm looking into it". Same email address.

Sounds really really really wrong to me. But without seeing full rules for contest can't be 100% sure. That would make me think twice about entering anything they have though. I'm sorry that happened to you. To me it looks more like the first email was sent in error--and the person judging made a big mistake.

Look on the bright side, at least it wasn't $10,000 in cash....I had a agency email me they make that error and I wasn't a grand prize winner. I'm still bitter. I think dwelling on these situations is self destructive--but understandably frustrating.

Thanks for the input implode. I don't think the 1st email was a mistake though because she just sent me back this -

"We apologize for the misunderstanding. Between the time that we had emailed you and received your email today, as we never received the first email on the 8th, the first winner who was notified sent in their affidavit in the allotted time they were given, as the rules stand. We will happily give you an ELLE consolation prize."

Complete falsity on their part about the email. I sent a reply to there congratulations email less than 6 hours after they sent it, and bccd myself and I got it. Unless the mysterious email snatchers stole the email, she got it. Very frustrating.

Google FCC sweepstakes and see if you find their number. They were very helpful when I had a sweepstakes issue. While I didn't call to file a claim, the lady said they encourage people to try to work it out with the host, first. So, if you can't resolve it with Elle, then perhaps the FCC would be interested in how they are running their sweepstakes - at least the notifying of winners part.

You know this had happened to me also once before... I had received a winning email and I had responded to it within 5 minutes... But I never got the prize even after few months... So I sent back another reply to that winning email asking about the status of the prize... No replies... Contacted them on facebook... They told me that somebody will contact me on my email address... Within few days, I got a mail from the same email address from which I had received the winning email... I replied back explaining the situation but they said that they never received my reply within required time frame... I told them that I will forward my reply email to them as a proof that I did reply back within required time period... Few days passed by, but I received no updates from them... So I again replied back to the new email asking if they got my forwarded email... Got a reply back that they didn't... Immediately again forwarded my reply email, but again got a reply back that they haven't received it... Told them to check their spam, but nothing there...

Good thing: The sweepstakes agency still decided to give me my prize and I finally received it...

Confusing thing: I still don't understand what was up with the email system! They supposedly were not getting any emails from me if I was replying to the winning email or if the winning email was a part of my email to them... But they were getting my other emails from the same email address... Totally weird... But it happened, and I still wonder why it happened!

*Sorry for the super-long story and post*

EDIT: replying to your situation... may be something similar happened with you wrt your email not getting delivered... but i believe it is wrong for sweepstakes agency to contact somebody else before your 15-days time-frame to confirm and send the affidavit had passed...

A month or two ago I posted about an email experience, so what you're describing turns out to not be unheard of. I and a couple of others won a giveaway from a blog. I checked the blog and saw I was a winner, but never received an email. Went to the Facebook page and saw one of the other winners asking about an email, saying she never received one. Don't know about the third winner - she never commented. Anyway, the blogger was so gracious about it and re-sent it; it appeared to be a re-send with the original info in it. And no it wasn't in spam, because I checked and I even searched gmail - I archive it all (delete nothing).

Thanks for your replies too KMA and crazee_an. Sorry about your misfortunes you went through as well. Sucks. I'll press them a bit further on this and see if they make it right or not. I just can't believe that they would be so unprofessional about it as they have been so far at least.

First of all, how can they be so unprofessional that they would e-mail two or who knows how many people that they've won a $1,000 prize when it's for one winner only? I mean, if the first person had 15 days, they should have waited 15 days and not turn this into a rat race by sending multiple notices to see who responds first. I, for one, do not understand how exactly they were able to conduct it this way; especially since it's Hearst. I've won from them and I've never had this happen before, really weird.

Regarding the e-mail reply, I've had that happen a few months ago. I found out because I went on their Facebook site and I saw that they listed the winners, my name, not there. I commented telling them my name isn't listed. The person who was doing the promotion e-mailed me as soon a he saw my comment saying he never received my reply and to forward the e-mail I sent. He said I would still be qualified when he finally received it. I don't entirely know why the first one didn't make it but the second one finally did. I now have to remember that whenever I have to reply to an email, I ask them to respond back confirming delivery of email.

If it was a mistake, then they should just come clean rather than waste your time. I mean it happens, but it's better than giving you the go-around. I could understand if you later read the rules that you're not eligible which happened to me, oops, my fault for not reading, but nowhere does it state that, right?

Here's the rules for the Elie Tahari: http://www.elle.com/Sweepstakes/f...cial-rules

I wish I could help you, but I've never had a scenario like this before. If nothing, perhaps contact another person higher up or a different department to explain how something like this could have happened. Keep us informed so if anything like this ever happens we know what we could do. Good luck.
