Timing Belt Replacement Service $299 w/ coupon (belt only) - Freehold Honda (Freehold NJ)

EDIT: Confirmed with the dealer that this deal ONLY includes parts and labor for the timing belt. No water pump, drive belts, coolant or tensioner are included.

Freehold Honda is currently offering a Timing Belt replacement for $299. The nearby Hamilton Honda used to run a very popular timing belt deal (see here). Unfortunately, they no longer offer it.

I am currently waiting on Freehold to confirm in writing for me exactly what is included (will update when I receive it), as well as additional charges (tensioner, etc), but wanted to post for anyone in the market for timing belt service in the NJ/PA/NYC/DE area. This may also apply to some Acura models.

i.e what would prevent a shop from simply taking car into garage for couple hours, do nothing with car and return to owner?

I will never recommend Freehold Honda after I came in for service (I needed an oil change and rotation) and the rep shuffled out this poorly photocopied piece of paper from the very bottom of his desk drawer, showing a 30/60/90/120 service package for almost $700. He pitched all the bullet points down the page and told me that my car could benefit from each and every one. While I stepped aside to "consider" how to pay for all of it, I contacted a friend at another Honda dealership (almost two hours away) and he told me that no reputable service departments use that type of servicing anymore, since Honda's own in-car diagnostics show exactly what needs to be done with the vehicle. His first words were, "if you ever see a service package like that at a dealership's service department, RUN." I came back and declined, and the rep's face dropped and looked like he was about to cry over losing the deal. I ended up going to my friend's dealership about a week later and got the required service for under $300 before discounts.

Those "service packages" R a joke

Here is a majority of what they do:

1- check tire pressure
2.-check and top off antifreeze (as needed)
3.-check and top off engine oil (as needed)
4- clean and tighten battery connectors
5- check and adjust alternator belt
6- check light bulbs exterior/interior
blah blah blah

Keep in mind any parts + labor installing these parts are extra.

Our 06 Honda Civic hasn't been in for 15/30/60k service since the first one. Now at 150k. Stealerships can put multiple techs on your car and you still pay the book rate for #hours it says it should take. If you need timing belt, this is a good price for a dealer but while in there, generally do idler, tensioner, water pump which at the dealer would cost an arm and a leg. Even it dealer doesn't return timing belt, you can physically see the new one.

ask for the old parts back and remove the cover yourself to makes sure they did the job. Yes they Scam all the time so it's best to do the job yourself or someone you know who will not rip you off.......

I had a mechanic at King Bear not only leave in my old belt, but damaged it. He must have stuck a knife in the inspection port and shaved down half of its width.

Also, maybe like the fear of undercooked chicken breasts, I'll never understand people who take their cars to the dealer for service unless only the dealer has the tools or tech to do it or it is under warranty. Find a good independent who will let you bring your own parts and you will save 35-50%, maybe more. I've lived in North and Socal almost my whole life and have always found good, honest mechanics happy to do the work and use customer-supplied parts.

If you just go by the Honda maintenance reminder though, it doesn't include everything you should do. For example, you should change the spark plugs and serpentine belt given your mileage.
