Nope, they have little rectangular gaps in the lids, so the food would dry out and stink up the fridge.

Well that stinks(like the food would in the fridge).

Guess they're only reusable if you wanna use them on other beer/soda cans.

My guess as to why it's like that is to prevent a suction thing from going on that might prevent the caps from coming off, that and to save weight. They designed them to hold the cans rigid when on a pallet so they don't have to shrink wrap the pallets. Shrink wrap usually can't be reused, so it's very bad for the environment as well as expensive and time consuming, both wrapping and unwrapping the pallets takes quite a bit of time in the warehouse, I used to work in one. It's also a PITA if the shrink wrapped pallet gets rained on.

I've worked in several warehouses myself and while wrapping a pallet could be time consuming at least one of them had a big machine where you put the pallet on a platform and it spun around and a huge roll of wrap went up and down along it to wrap it up for you. Taking off the wrap was easy at times. Usually all you had to do was cut along a corner with a boxcutter and then walk around it to take the wrap off.

But yeah, when the wrap got wet it was pretty bad. As for recycling the wrap, I'm sure they have programs now to do so, but back in the 90's I doubt they did. So there was a lot of waste going on. Heck. The one place would send wooden pallets to the compactor if they were anything less than perfect rather than sending them out in a lot to be repaired.

We had a guy who would pick up the damaged pallets and turn the good wood into furniture or chop them up, bundle them and sell them as kindling. Saved the company from having to dispose of them so they gave them to him for free.
