Ordered some soda online and it had weird looking hard plastic caps for the six pack holder. I tried removing a can, DH tried too and no luck. Had to watch a video about them to learn the trick. 
Evidently these are rigid so they don't have to use shrink wrap on the pallets when they ship the cans, they're made from recycled plastic.

But yeah, when the wrap got wet it was pretty bad. As for recycling the wrap, I'm sure they have programs now to do so, but back in the 90's I doubt they did. So there was a lot of waste going on. Heck. The one place would send wooden pallets to the compactor if they were anything less than perfect rather than sending them out in a lot to be repaired.
