I once walked an 85 year old woman who ONLY USED JUNO FOR EMAIL through pinging her DNS server to make certain it was working, and then had her manually change DNS entries over to OpenDNS.

All over the telephone. She didn't know the difference between left and right click when we started.

"I'm clicking on it with both buttons but nothing's happening!"

The fact that you're on Slickdeals means your skills set is above hers. Smilie So you're help-able.

After 85 year old woman, that sentence looks like this: jhfsahfajhf;jsahfahrfuhfrowjncoshvuabgvjbviu;sbv

What version of win7 arj? You might could set up a vpn, grab a free account with dyndns, forward a port on your router and connect that way from over there. Otherwise... depending on what's blocked wherever it is you're going, logmein (free) or Microsoft Live Mesh (also free) could work for you.

Not sure if you can still get a new Mesh account but if you already have one all you have to do is add the device(s).

win 7 pro. i've got no idea what's blocked, they're really restrictive there and i never really put in the time to get even a proxy going. i think i'll go logmein.

Logmein would be the easiest and probably unblocked as well. I think Win7 Pro would do a VPN for you but it takes quite a bit of setup which you may or may not be willing to do. I thought it was fun but then again I'm a geek. laugh out loud

Is there anybody over there now with a computer you could use to test logmein? They could install it and you can see whether you can connect to them.

ooh that's a good idea. i'll have my parents try it out. can logmein resume it from standby? or in other words.. what's the min level it can awake the computer?

You can set up an SSH tunnel over port 80 (standard port - so not blocked) to your US-based internet connection. You don't even have to have desktop on if your router can support this (Tomato/DD-WRT can). You can SSH through just the router and run all your traffic over that wherever you are in the world from any internet connection.

If you do this correctly you don't need any Remote application - just any browser on the client machine set with the correct proxy settings. The server (in your case "desktop") doesn't even need to be involved. You could accomplish that with any router running Tomato/DD-WRT only. In other words, your "desktop" wouldn't need to be on at all unless you want to access files specific to that machine - documents, media, etc.

Now, if that's the case, then yes. You'd need some sort of software running on the desktop in addition to the above. You'd also need the ability to turn the desktop on and off at your discretion remotely.

You can probably - it depends on NIC on the desktop and if it supports - do something like WOL (Wake On Lan) with your desktop. The NIC needs to have magic packet support. It's not something every NIC out there supports out of the box. Some don't support it at all. Or sometimes it involves updating the driver or the NIC utility (you know the software NO ONE installs for their network interface card?) to one directly from the manufacturer rather than what you might find on a pre-built desktop support site (like Dell).

Know what supports sending a magic packet via the router to any NIC on the LAN? Tomato.

Also if your US-based IP address changes (read: isn't static) you'd need to set up some sort of dynamic DNS so that you'd have a static hostname that points to the dynamic IP - something like arjhasleftthecountry.homeip.net or something. Lots of ways out there to do this for free. I usually recommend DynDNS as it's been around forever and has a desktop client that you can run on any machine. Also a lot of router firmwares support this, including DD-WRT/Tomato.

That's some of the broad strokes. Depending on what you want specifically I can make some more recommendations.
