Use one of these timers that you can set a schedule with that are usually used for Christmas lights and stuff. Have it run for 45 minutes and then off for 15. That's how I do it.

Usually a desired humidity level is set, and it goes on and off automatically... Until the defrost switch goes out and you need to turn it off manually to melt the ice build-up. :(
