Here's a list of movies on BD100 discs that you won't be able to watch in their entirety on a Sony 4K player.

For Sony, I even used both HDMI, still no go. Another user above suggested I vent it adequately but the 3 discs I tried, all failed in few minutes into the movie and the player was sitting on top of another turned off unit, with lots of space above. Not sure if it can heat up so quickly. Moreover, UBP-X800M2 is advertised as a well built player with metal chassis.
Not against people setting up their own streaming, but a collection of lets say 1000 movies would take quite a bit to do. Market is surely shrinking and I rarely use my 4k player, but I like having the option. I can understand how some would prefer a stand alone setup versus a streaming setup. I will let them make their own choices.
In the end a streaming setup is better but costs dramatically more.
edit: My Pioneer Blu-ray burner was a little over $100 about 10 years ago, if you need to add one to your computer.

I may sound like someone with no clue, but I have been running my setup since 2016 with unRAID OS and have quite a bit of experience in automation and home servers

You can use your current computer as an HTPC for PLEX.
HDD storage (1TB) is $25.
Free Ripping software:
Handbrake
MakeMKV
Freemake
There is "work" in getting your arse off the couch and flipping discs. So, the convenience of PLEX is broadcasting ALL your movies to ANY and ALL rooms. If you wanted to do that, how many of these players do you need for EACH television? Or are you going to be carrying your Sony player around? Stop being a boomer and stream (your own content).
Ventilation was not a problem for me. This is a known issue discussed heavily on Reddit and AVS Forum. It's possible not all of those discs would be problematic, but most of the discs I personally had issues with were in fact BD100. I went through two players to further isolate the issue and the same discs froze at the same exact timestamp. YMMV I guess, but Sony has become one of the worst tech/home theater companies with far too many defunct products.
Prime used to have that. All three, original voice act with translated cc. I was halfway through it until my kids took over the TV entirely.
Obviously, you don't. Thank you for contributing to the thread.
There really isn't a reason 99% of people would have to buy any other player than a Panasonic 420/820. They really are that good.
You also will personally benefit from the interfaces being completely identical.
Question, let's say you have a pretty good upscaling TV like the Sony A80j. Would the Panasonic player upscaling be that much better than the upscaling from the Sony TV with regular blu-rays/4k discs? Planning to get the a80j soon.

The UB420 is the best non-Dolby Vision 4K disc player you can get, so it's hard to go wrong (it specifically has a mode in 'Settings>HDMI>Advanced>HDR Display Type' for "OLED" but you can try all the different modes). I watch 1080 discs on it all the time. 99% certain the player is doing the upscaling in my situation. Since you're specific TV doesn't support Dolby Vision, there really isn't a reason for you to NOT get the UB420.
I am very brand agnostic. Until these Panasonic players came around I was a huge fan of Sony and had them before 4K. Because the Panasonic UB820 (with Dolby Vision) and the UB420 (without Dolby Vision) have built in user selectable tone mapping settings with that TV Type setting, the HDR Optimizer and a few other image adjustment settings no other 4K disc player has, I just don't know of a compelling reason to buy any other player brand.
I will say though, the X700M having Dolby Vision at $150 is pretty incredible, but there is so much more regular HDR10 content and so much benefit with the settings in the UB420. If you have lots of Dolby Vision discs and your TV is Dolby Vision capable, there just might be a solid case to buy both.
