Sony has the Dolby Vision the kids are always talking about these days. The Panasonic doesn't.
Someone might have already mentioned it, but DO NOT buy a Sony 4K player. Not only is it annoying to have to manually disable/enable Dolby Vision depending on the content, but almost any movie written to a BD100 disc will freeze about 2/3rds of the way in. Sony has ignored this issue for years, just like a lot of the issues/bugs plaguing their other products. Do not support this company. They could care less about giving the consumer a product that can perform its basic functions.

Here's a list of movies on BD100 discs that you won't be able to watch in their entirety on a Sony 4K player.

There's a lot of niche/limited-run stuff that simply doesn't exist on streaming platforms in the US, let alone older stuff that's long been out of print (you can have my original Robotech DVD set with the original audio when you pry it from my cold, dead hands). Discs may be deprioritized for a lot of folks, and even understandably so...but they're not going anywhere.

That's a good question that I've never really seen a definitive answer for. Reviewing upscaling is difficult and I wonder how many different algorithms different TV manufacturers use. I'd imagine it'd be relatively simple to compare upscaling from different players, but there are so many TV brands and types I just don't know if that's ever been done.

The UB420 is the best non-Dolby Vision 4K disc player you can get, so it's hard to go wrong (it specifically has a mode in 'Settings>HDMI>Advanced>HDR Display Type' for "OLED" but you can try all the different modes). I watch 1080 discs on it all the time. 99% certain the player is doing the upscaling in my situation. Since you're specific TV doesn't support Dolby Vision, there really isn't a reason for you to NOT get the UB420.

I am very brand agnostic. Until these Panasonic players came around I was a huge fan of Sony and had them before 4K. Because the Panasonic UB820 (with Dolby Vision) and the UB420 (without Dolby Vision) have built in user selectable tone mapping settings with that TV Type setting, the HDR Optimizer and a few other image adjustment settings no other 4K disc player has, I just don't know of a compelling reason to buy any other player brand.

I will say though, the X700M having Dolby Vision at $150 is pretty incredible, but there is so much more regular HDR10 content and so much benefit with the settings in the UB420. If you have lots of Dolby Vision discs and your TV is Dolby Vision capable, there just might be a solid case to buy both.

Thanks, I'll prob get the ub820 then at some point. 👍

In terms of quality is this better than a 4k UHD ripped straight to disk and then played using Plex/Kodi.

I doubt you could tell the difference. I rip for convenience, but the movies don't look or sound different played from the disc on a player.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I have a PS4 Pro which plays blu ray disk. What better would this do that a PS4 cannot?

See, you're just commenting to fight.

You can use your current computer as an HTPC for PLEX.
HDD storage (1TB) is $25.

Free Ripping software:
Handbrake
MakeMKV
Freemake

There is "work" in getting your arse off the couch and flipping discs. So, the convenience of PLEX is broadcasting ALL your movies to ANY and ALL rooms. If you wanted to do that, how many of these players do you need for EACH television? Or are you going to be carrying your Sony player around? Stop being a boomer and stream (your own content).

Don't you lose Dolby vision doing this? Aren't those formats mostly hdr10? Not that it makes that much of a difference but dv is slightly better.

I could be wrong but I think if they don't compress it's the same other than maybe losing Dolby vision and it playing in hdr10 which is a minor loss in dynamic range.

This is true, and why the people who prefer this Sony to the Panasonic think the Sony is better. As a Sony X700 owner though, what good is the Dolby Vision if the disk isn't recognized as being in the tray? Or it overheats and won't play? Or it stutters and stops 3/4 of the way through a move? All things that have happened to me with the Sony. I just got the Panasonic front page deal for the same amount; I can't comment on which is better yet, but I'm frustrated enough that I'm willing to spend another $150 for something more dependable.

I've had this Sony x700 for over 2 years now and have had zero issues so far. I personally own over 20 BD100 4K discs and have not had any stutter issues.

Who still watch disk?
Anyone who has a halfway decent 5.1 or better sound system. Streamed audio has failed every direct comparison I have done with it's disc counterpart. Not to mention there are a number of out of print titles in older disc formats that I have never been able to find through any digital source.

It's a trade off. The only real knock against the Panasonic 420 is no Dolby Vision Support. Conversely the Sony has plenty of complaints about the discs not reading, skipping, freezing, ect. As Someone who has owned 6 different Sony Blu-Ray players over the last 7 years I can say that every single one of them have these same issues. Add in the fact that the Panasonic has tone mapping, better quality upscaling, etc. and it's just a better overall player for the money spent. Also keep in mind that most 4k Blu-Ray titles at this point don't support DV.

Is the RPi4 good enough as a Plex server for UHD remuxes w/ 5.1 audio?
