They also have a $10 off code that applies to the 5950x to bring it down to $449, if that is another cpu ppl are looking at.
I'm going to still wait a bit. I have seen 5950x for around 350 to 400 on eBay so I assume it will continue to drop due to the surplus.

For anyone buying this CPU, it runs super hot, at the idle temperature it goes through the roof while gaming it exceeds over 80 and almost reaches 90. I bought this the other day and I have an x570 Asus board, I had to apply the BIOS settings below to bring the temperature down without losing performance, in fact, it slightly increased the performance per my 3Dmark report while keeping the temperature below 75 degrees.

AMD Ryzen 5000 series chip needs to be undervolted for low power consumption, system stability and performance.
-> In the BIOS, go to AI Tweaker, and select AMD Overclocking - Accept.
-> Select ' PBO' (Precision Boost Overdrive)
-> Change settings:
- Precision Boost Overdrive: Advanced
- PBO Limits: Motherboard
- Platform Thermal Throttle Limit: Manual
- Platform Thermal Throttle Limit: 75
Basically, this will enable PBO, let the motherboard transfer adequate power to the components, change the Thermal Throttle to Manual and limit to 75 which forces the CPU to never exceed 75-degree temperature making the CPU behave normally and not throttle and cause other system issues like slowdown, etc.

Different boards may have PBO settings somewhere else, look up your manual.

Good luck, this CPU is awesome.

Better off with the 5800x3d on amazon when they had it for $289.27 plus another 20% off on top. making it about $232.

You tried using the curve optimizer within the amd windows app. That helps me and you should be in a negative value afterwards, which you can use as a baseline to go toward the positive side if stability becomes an issue.

OCing are a hassle and a waste of time for the Ryzen I tried, so the curve optimizer and some other setting helped my 5800x near 5GHz for most cores and was able to sustained it longer. I'm not sure if the the temp dropped, didn't pay attention to it. But with the AIO and some decent case fans, I didn't see any problems.

I saw that same coupon listed for other Amazon items but it did not apply during checkout. No idea what's going on.

That's just their rated TDP, which no longer corresponds to actual power draw. It's become a very confusing metric. I had a 5900x and at stock it actually consumed 140w with all cores under load.

But yes, 5950x will typically only consume a few watts more than 5900x so they generally have the same power draw at stock. 5950x uses better silicon samples (particularly for CCD1 which has 8 cores for 5950x vs 4 cores for 5900x) which allows it to be more power efficient at stock configuration since each core can remain stable with less power.

I tried the Curve Optimizer from the app, but it ended up going into an endless reboot loop. I had to reset the bios and let the motherboard manage the voltage and things went smooth, quieter, and no long humming fan noise. Smilie

I have a friend who has this with the thermalright peerless assassin and it doesn't get anywhere near the temps your experiencing. Perhaps try a better cooler?

I guess it depends on who you are. If you want really great gaming performance then the X3D version for sure is the way to go.

But in the case of a friend of mine who's getting into blendr and Ai and just needs raw power the 12 core is way more powerful than the X3D. And he didn't have to spend ridiculous money for the 16 core.
