The Series S has outsold the Series X 3 to 1. While you may discount it because of it's lower price point, it has sold a ton. They are also the fastest selling consoles Xbox has ever had.
It helps that the series x was actually unavailable for purchase for the first 2 years.
I agree you can simply buy a normal storage device and just transfer over your Xbox series s/x games back over to your console when you wanna play em.
