I don't have an iPad Air, but I am currently on the latest version of iPadOS (17.1.1). On my 11" iPad Pro M1 it says 10.62 GB for iPadOS and 9.72 GB of System Data. The rest is Messages, iCloud Drive, Photos (includes videos) and Apps, which will vary depending on the user of course. I have a lot of apps and some (not a lot) of photos with one long video, and am using 60 GB total of the 128 GB storage.

Can any of those be stored/transferred on an OTG USB or external hard drive? Need one for my sister as she's entering art school and the 64GB is the only one that falls in our budget, but our main concern is the limited storage.

All photos, videos, music, downloaded movies can be saved to an external hd.
Data and the OS cannot be saved to EHD.

Article from Apple may explain better than I.

Really appreciate the guidance. Guess we'll go with it then.
Thank you.

Kinda "new" to iPads - terminology and capability.
Have a ( years or so old iPad 6th generation and looking to upgrade to a newer one.
Could someone help me to decide between iPad (10th generation), iPad Air (5th generation) and iPad Pro (4th generation - 10.9 inch)?
I know the price difference is from $450 to $700, but I am willing to spend this much.
Thanks

I was in the exact same boat. I went with the iPad Pro because the standard storage is 128 GB instead of 64 GB (I didn't want to be limited as I keep iPads for 4+ years), plus you get all the little extra features like better screen, camera and Face ID. Upgrading memory on the others will get you 256 GB and get you closer to the iPad Pro in price but then you don't get all the other niceties. That was my logic and I am very happy with it. However if the base Air came with 128 GB, I would have gotten that. There are plenty of videos on YouTube comparing them. It's ultimately about what resonates with you and which trade offs are you ok with.

Great. Was leaning more towards iPad Air, but the point you mentioned regarding the 64 vs 128 GB in Air vs Pro also was making me lean towards the latter as well. Perhaps that is what I will all go for.
Any chance the price could go down - Black Friday? Also, any experience with Best Buy open box - would you recommend that? Thanks a lot

I bought mine Open Box from Walmart for $600 during the summer of 2022 and it was perfect, but it could go either way. A few months later I bought a brand new one for my wife from Target during Black Friday 2022 for $550 (I couldn't believe it). It's anyone's guess what might pop up during BF this year because not all deals are announced beforehand, but I would wait and see. March 2024 should bring a whole slew of new iPads so I'll be in the market next year to upgrade my daughter's iPad 9 to (what I hope would be) a base 128 GB Air as she takes off for college.
