Looks to be $300 off a similar configuration, however, for whatever reason you can't configure this on apples website.

Apple is a bit shady nowadays...
Non-pro chip in pro models.
Not directed towards the OP, but just want to point out the hypocrisy over here. Posted this exact deal a month ago and it remained this price for a good 2-3 weeks, and it was heavily downvoted with multiple people whining about this being the regular chip on a Pro model: https://slickdeals.net/f/17278783-apple-macbook-pro-14-liquid-retina-xdr-m3-chip-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-space-gray-1499-99?src=SiteSearchV2Algo
Now suddenly, everyone seems to like it. A bird to all those people.
No, you're stepping down from M1 Pro chip to base M3 chip

Not really the same ballpark use case but this would slightly be better than the M2 15" air that is at Best Buy for the same price I presume aside from smaller storage?

No computer should get hot enough to throttle down 50% of its performance in any scenario.

It's horrible design and horrible managerial decisions. Apple is a multi trillion dollar company cheaping out on essentials for a while now.
I am happy to call out Apple when Apple is wrong, and I often do; but in this particular case, I really don't think there is anything horrible about it. If you want a machine that can endure sustained load, then by definition you need a machine with active cooling/fans - i.e. a MBP. If instead you want the lightest, thinnest machine possible, and your needs are more office work/low load, then a fanless MBA is perfectly reasonable. It won't throttle under erratic bursty loads (i.e. it will be just as productive as a MBP) and you don't have to carry around hardware you don't need/want (fans, heatsinks, thicker machine, etc.) Choose the machine that fits your needs.

Plus you get a bit of extra battery life as well if you don't need the "Pro" power which a lot of us really don't. I'll probably go MBP w/ non-Pro processor next go around as I do much prefer the display and speakers on the Pro over the Air line.

Single core is much much faster though. And GPU in some app that does ray tracing is much faster too Overall a good deal IMO. I paid 1700 with tax for 15" air with the same cpu mem and ssd
Oh you and I actually agree on that. What I was writing was to support the idea that M3 (non-pro) is still an upgrade from M1 Pro base model for everything but certain GPU workloads.

Absolutely and I agree.

I went from M1Pro 10-core cpu/16gpu (forgot exact) to M3 Air 15" 8-core/10gpu

I know I can get M3 pro 8-core with just a small price but I wanted 15 and I wanted something new since I had the Pro14 form factor for a while. LLM runs fast enough with 10GPUs.

I only plan to keep this thing until M4 comes out anyway. Will cycle it down to someone else or just trade it in. maybe new Pro model with M4 then I'll def switch again.

I actually bought 16" 16 cpu/40GPU 48GB machine and returned it. Can't use that much power. LLM was damn fast but not using it enough it was heavy af to carry as a daily.

then I changed to a 14" 14cpu/30GPUs 36GB but then I still didn't like it cuz it looked the same as my old M1PRo MPro14 lol.

Then I changed to M3 Air cuz I def needed the single core boost of 40% and LLM runs fast enough so I decided to keep the M3 Air 15. Bigger screen without the heft and now I can run split screen browsers and not feel too tight.

I had ass-pirations to run ton of stuff on Pro16 16-cpu/40-gpu cores and 48GB but once I got it... I was lazy and didn't feel like doing that much on my computer anymore. you know.. be cool and run lots of docker containers, some actual Vms, do some crazy video / photography work again, work with raw images again.... run 26+GB LLMs... Did a few of those things then decided it was a waste of time to do it on a single machine and I hated carrying a $4000 laptop and worry about it more than a $1700 machine. TOO HEAVY TOO!

Just wanted to make the observation that the $1500 price on this after tax (~$1600-$1650) is just a bit less than buying at B&H [bhphotovideo.com] and using their tax-refunding Payboo store card.

Considering you get a bigger screen and double the storage in a lighter, slimmer chassis with the 15" MBA you can't really compare the two...

Apple should take the Pro out of the name Apple MacBook Pro Laptop. Calling it a MacBook Pro and have the non Pro chip.
