We've printed photos but not on photo paper.
We also use it as a networked document scanner to great effect, especially since the kids need to scan their music scores and the 632 (older model to this one) can scan those bigger page sizes directly on the planum.
I've owned this 646 model since January. Your description of your model's software does resonate quite closely with my feelings on the 646 software.
Do you mean print photos. Lasers in general are not as good as inkjets when it comes to printing photos.

Similar issue with Canon....Stick with Brother, 3 brother lasers with no issues I think 1 is even a refurb
