looks like this will only do 8" wide, so 11" rolls won't fit (so why is the model number "11"20)I can't believe how expensive these are lately.
I got my vm2244 (fits 11" wide bags) years ago for less than this and it's still going
picked up an older model for back up at goodwill for $5
Can't do without vacuum sealer if you have a garden, also handy for any deal you get like grains or coffee and want to keep the extras in the freezer for a while.

I have been happy with the Kirkland brand refills.
$23.99
Features:
3 Rolls 8in×20ft and 4 Rolls 11in×16ft
50 Precut 1qt Bags
BPA-Free
Compatible with Most Vacuum Sealing Systems

Compared to FoodSaver brand:
$44.99
2 rolls 8"x20ft and 3 rolls 11"x16ft
46 precut 1qt bags.

If you are asking about using ziplocs vs foodsaver, I can't help you. They are two very different use cases and I use both.
What are you actually "foodsaving"? what do you vacuum seal? I'm really curious about these, and what people actual do with them. I mean the picture shows an $0.80 avocado being sealed.. who doesn't just eat the full fruit?

Why is everyone giving away their vacuum sealers? Are they not all they're cracked up to be?
It takes effort to use them, and you have to have some specific need. It's one of those things people buy without really knowing what they'll use it for, but, you know, it must be good for something. But they take up space, and unless people have done their research, the price of the Jarden branded bags scares them away. And used canisters can go for $20-$30 each on eBay.

You can use it for sous-vide. I use it when I need something sealed up waterproof even without using the vacuum feature. Done properly, raw or cooked meat sealed up can last a year or more in the freezer. I also use it with an attachment to seal up mason jars - it's not the same as canning because it's not sterile, but will keep stuff like sauces for weeks in the fridge.

Picked one up. First vacuum sealer. Want to start sous vide steaks and chicken for meal prep. Will this roll [walmart.com]work on this unit? Thank you.
usually need the bigger 11" bags for sous vide, this only does 8" bags so yes the roll linked should work.

sous-vide? I'm against all of this. *Use a pressure cooker. It's much more effective. As I figured, they're totally unnecessary. I guess that is why these are fading out and showing up in thrift shops all across the USA. Who needs to keep sauces for weeks? The bags are too expensive for warranting a purchase.

Freezer bags can also do the same 8-12month seal. Thanks for the verification.

Pressure cooking won't work if you want that perfectly medium rare steak.

when batching stock for soups, braising, pan sauces, etc. portioning, sealing and flattening the bags saves a ton of freezer space + the thin bag layer thaws much easier than a frozen jar.

Pressure cooking will not achieve what sous vide cooking can. I live in a condo and don't have a yard so I'll do a chuck roast for 36hrs or a pork shoulder for 12hrs. In my experience, pressure cooking will not effectively break down the connective tissue. In the case of a chuck roast, you're left with unpleasant parts, like where the muscles converge. Braising or slow cooking will take care of this, to an extent, I prefer the precision offered by an immersion circulator. Plus it wouldn't be safe to run your oven for 36hrs, even at 170⁰F

One word of caution; the rubber gasket replacements for this particular model seem to have been discontinued. The rubber gaskets are a bit of a consumable (require replacement every 2 or so years if you use it regularly), and without good condition ones, the unit won't be able to pull a vacuum effectively.

We buy meat in bulk, like lets say 20lbs of ground beef at a time, we'll portion it out into our own 1lbs bags, vacuum seal and put in the freezer. Same with bulk sirloins, pork chops, chicken breasts, salmon pieces, stuff like that. It's 100% worth it for us. Nothing will ever freezer burn, we've had some stuff fall behind a shelf in the freezer and was several years old and no frost or freezer burn at all. Helps if you have a Costco membership, or get deals at a local butcher. Some times we get really good meat deals at Costco, and it's hard to pass up!

I said a year but you could probably eat meat that's sealed up and has been in the freezer 5 years if you're not too fussy about quality (which after 5 years would likely be terrible). The degradation in quality becomes noticeable after maybe a year, sometimes more depending on what it is and how it was frozen, but if it's been kept near zero degrees F and vacuum sealed, technically it should keep indefinitely.

Ya the rolls are 8" wide so will work with this unit. I tried the rolls ended up going back to the premade ones just easier. Got 100 premade 8" x 12" generic bags off of Amazon for $17. So 100ft of bags for the same price as 2 15ft rolls.
Thanks!

Will be getting a larger model from costco.

No wonder it's on clearance.
