I know it is not a latest gen, but I think this is a good price for brand new one.

Great deal - I'm still rocking the DS216j... these things are pretty great if you have realistic expectations. File backup, security camera video storage, file sharing, local streaming without transcoding... I love mine - and the fact that I'm still getting updates 8 years after original release is a great testament to Synology's support for older generations.
Max drive size is 16TB (x2 for 32TB total).
Personally I wouldn't use the J models. There are many reasons. If you are not familiar, I'd read into it before making a decision.

Let me ask you guys thinking of buying this: Would you want a smartphone if it had only 500mb ram. Or a laptop with 1/2 gb ram, would you buy a firestick, or other 2024 product with only 1/2 gb ram.
My MAIN PC, and all my other home pc's have 16gb ram, my smartphone has 6gb ram, my IPAD has 3gb ram!

NASCOMPARES which reviews NAS's you might want to look at for NAS in 2024.

I have 2 QNAP NAS's that only have 2gb ram! I hardly use them anymore.

Now, maybe it is great for you. So buy it. But if it was any modern device would you buy it if it only had 500mb ram and COULD NOT BE UPDATED at all! Smilie

I may buy one, for fun, but I have lots of NAS's and DAS's and gadgets . It is 110 dollars with 2 bay.

Maybe others can share if they own it, and have other NAS's with more then 500mb RAM. Smilie

p.s. I was the only one that shared it ONLY had 500mb ram! Now you can put 2 x16TB hard drive in unit. It is the 500mb ram that is the problem! Let the FOOLS rush in where wise-tech geeks fear to tread. Smilie
it's a basic NAS. 2GB is more than enough.
it's not running Chrome

Thoughts on using this just for backing up pictures from our phones? No PLEX just trying to get rid of iCloud.

Thanks

It runs apps plenty, and slowly.

RAM is not upgradeable, will not run latest software.
What exactly is your latest? Cause mine is Version: 7.2.1-69057 Update 5 on 218j and it runs perfectly fine.

As for a J model, it does what they promise. Mine works flawlessly for torrent, file/picture share and backups. I don't need transcoding, don't even understand the point, I mean what exactly you transcode, a 90GB DV UHD file to 1080p? I play all my remuxes using Infuse on Apple TV and it plays everything, no dropped frames or choppy images.

LOL! My point was that it DOES NOT have 2gb ram! I made that point very clear. It has 1/2 gb ram (500mb ram). Big difference!

I do have a QNAP NAS that does have 2gb ram, and that is 4x the amount of ram than the model in this thread.

I've had this for years now. I primarily needed it for my growing photo storage, and my on-site backup for all my stuff. (2 x 14tb) It's worked great for simplicity and peace of mind. I'm about ready to upgrade to a DS+ model 2-bay because the ram struggles with previews for larger 40-80mb raw photo files. If you're a light user, or getting started, this is a great deal.
Do it. I edit 47MP photos (from Lumix S1R) directly off of my old DS218+ via wifi with no lag. Need 2.5Gbe network ports and wifi 6 160mhz devices though.

I imagine if you want transcoding you could just use it as a NAS and have a different, more powerful server do the transcoding? I'm asking because I'm planning on building a Plex/jellyfin media server soon and I want it to be able to do 4k
I run plex on a mac mini... but I've used XBMC (running on an xbox or similar device) + my synology nas without issue. I don't stream in 4K though... I only have 2x3TB drives, so I'm mostly streaming in 720 to 1080

Transcoding is for viewing outside your home. Have you ever tried streaming a 4k (or even 1080p) mkv to your hotel wifi in Vietnam? Good luck widdat. Need to drop the resolution and bitrate to fit the pipe.

Is it a good NAS to start with? Just looking to store files/pictures and backup phone.

Edit: never mind, it is sold out
