23 and me is a BAD VENDOR. Profit driven, using your data in stuff they sell to others that is supposed to be anonymized but wasn't or wasn't properly (more than once). They've been hacked by China (most recent one: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/04...ion-users/), too. Our neighbor down the street has a daughter that worked there from the beginning and has plenty of horror stories. Never do 23 and me.

Never.

I don't believe Ancestry proper has been hacked. Their subsidiary rootsweb was in 2017, but unlike 23 and me, they didn't blame their customers for their system's security failure. I know plenty who have done Ancestry and found blood relatives they didn't know they had. So, and easy recommendation for Ancestry, especially at this price!
Share your genetic and racial info for free in their data records. Your insurance might access them in future to decipher about your health issues down the lane. Dont share your DNA period.
Don't waste your money on this crap. I did mine with 23andme and they asked a ton of survey questions about my origin and the results they provided was exactly what I gave them. It took them 3 mths for providing nothing more than I already know. It is a total scam.

Can we do this testing with some sort of anonymity? If not, it doesn't make sense to pay them and give our data as well

Hehe. Don't do this if you think a relative might have or maybe will commit a murder at some point...
Not sure what access FBI actually have, but there are stories of them using relatives DNA records to find culprits.

So, do we have a bunch of tin foil hat conspiracy theorists in this thread, or is the concern shown regarding compromise/data sharing justified?
It's just reality. Even if the government (FBI, etc) doesn't have access and the company doesn't sell you're information every which way today, it doesn't mean they won't eventually. Even if it takes the company going under and having their "assets" bought off, all that data will still considered an asset to someone else.

I'm the farthest thing from a conspiracy theorist, yes I know the government is tracking me by using a smartphone, yada-yada. There's no way in hell I'm giving my genetic profile to some company to sell or give away with impunity.

I had a young family member murdered three years ago. If any of my relatives have done something where DNA was left/taken, I'm not too worried about what happens to them.

Yeah that's exactly what I was going to say, you better make sure no one in your family did anything criminally before signing up for one of these, cause they gonna find them. So many cold cases solved this way now, but I guess if you're not worried about giving all of your generic info away to greedy large companies seeking your to sell your data, then have at it!
Don't see why anyone should be worried about getting any of your family members put in prison if they committed crimes. If someone in my family was a serial killer, I hope they go to the death chamber even if it was my parents or bother etc.
Unless you're a weirdo and protect your family at all costs even if they killed innocent people for fun?

The only bad thing is selling your data to other companies.

No one has even mentioned the best part of the deal. Free lifetime+ storage of all your DNA data on the dark web after the company is, invariably, breached.

This website gives some advice to reduce risks. https://www.dnasquirrel.com/how-t...-ancestry/

However, it mentions "Is it against the law to break company terms of service and mask my identity?"

"No. However, by signing up with one of these companies you are agreeing to their terms of service, which states that you are required to provide your legal name and address otherwise the company has the right to stop providing service to you, and to not offer you a refund."

Anyone know?

What if you gave fake name and no origin info, so in case of hacks (when and not if), even though your DNA info has been hacked, it's not tied to your name.

Has anyone been successful in doing these tests without real name?
I only read online about others using aliases/no data with AncestryDNA and it worked fine showing potential relatives etc and connections to others that have taken the DNA tests.

They just stated that with 23andme it's against the terms.

Also, this goes on sale for same price every December + Black Friday if anyone is thinking of waiting on this sale. Figure in the future it'll get even cheaper.... nod

The word you were looking for was "please". Figured I'd help! Sometimes things end up on the tip of my tongue too. We're all getting older and more forgetful
