You need to get rid of the weeds before you do anything. They will outcompete anything else. Use some good broad-spectrum herbicides. Theres a bajillion schools of thought on ideal post-emergants...I recommend that you watch Silver Cymbal's youtube channel; he has very detailed first-hand feedback on caring for his own lawn, and its totally lay-person friendly.
I agree with the other poster; you mainly do stuff in the fall. 90% of my work is after columbus day. aerating, dethatching, overseeding, fertilizing. You may have to leave your lawn for dead this year, since all of the major growth is happening right this moment. Once the heat sets in, growth slows down and the weeds start having a field day, which is why the weeds are the main enemy in the summer (and drought, of course).
For northern lawns 👍

I've tried many different grass products on my lawn with mixed success. One tip: Look at the labels and see how much seed is actually in the bag. I couldn't see the percentage on the links provided. You'd be surprised at the number of companies that sell 3-5% seed and the rest is filler/fertilizer. Where I am in the northeast, you have to seed in the fall. Also, Walmart's seed brand is pretty good with 50% seed content.
FYI there is a very small amount of seed in these things compared to the ratio of fertilizer. If it is seed you want you are better off with a product like https://a.co/d/c7SQW5l
I prefer to get a bag of seed and mix it with this bag, it allows me what I feel is the right ratio of fertilizer and soil enhancements plus plenty of seed. Works like a charm to fill spots in the lawn. This isn't something I use to redo or fix a lawn, simply to maintain one.
Is that the order with those steps? (aeration, dethatching, overseeing, fertilizing) and should there be a waiting period between each?
Id dethatch first, since you want to really rake up all of the thatch before aerating. IF you do core aeration, you want the little holes to be as exposed as possible to accept all of the seeds that you will be laying down.
I do everything except fertilizing in one day, usually because I am just too tired to do the fertilizing by then. You will need "new grass" fertilizer with phosphorus (the middle number) if you do the seeding.
My lawn was quite meh last fall through to the beginning of spring, but right now in May, my turf absolutely stomps everyone else's lawn, and all I did was apply crabgrass preventer and spring fertilizer (as separate components) around Easter. I dont even bother taking out the odd dandelion because there is literally no room for them to grow or germinate!

Don't use herbicides! At least not if you are on well water or live within a mile of any stream river pond lake or if kids or pets play in the yard! This stuff kills everything including beneficial water vegetation! Every brand cause multiple types of cancer! It has all been scientifically proven. Poison is poison no mater what you name it. In the right amount it will kill you and everything else.
My lawn is in pretty bad shape. It used to be nice but then 3 straight drought summers and I gave up after it was taken over by weeds when the grass went dormant early.
Would this be good to try to bring back my lawn, or should I have thrown down a pre-emergent or weed killer before trying to seed with this?
Would it be better to buy this and wail until October to use it?
You're gonna hear from the "never seed until fall" fanboys on here but I just got done re-seeding my whole yard because it was in the state yours was. Lots of weeds and patches of dirt. I tried pulling the weeds I could, seeded, fertilizer and some straw over top to keep the birds from eating it. Water every day. It's coming in pretty good. Here's hoping it holds and doesn't die off over the summer. I'll probably re-seed again in the fall but better than having a muddy yard all year

"The dose makes the poison" - Paracelsus (roughly translated)
Lawns, like white wedding dresses and color TVs, were a province of rich people that the masses eventually copied. There is nothing healthy of noble about growing a monocrop in a non-native region, often at the detriment of native plants, which requires life support of constantly fertilizer, unnatural amounts of water, insecticide, and...yes, herbicide. And to top it off...no one is going to eat it!! All in all, I dont disagree with you...it just seems pedantic to mention it in a thread centered on suburban lawn care.
That being said, if you have a healthy lawn, you shouldnt need many herbicides, if any at all. I stopped using weed-n-feed, and only use one herbicide (tenacity) on weeds only on the spot that I see them. I use vinegar and salt water on my pavers and cracks in the driveway where the odd weed will grow...but as you know, even salt is a poison to the land if used excessively...again, see the quote above.
Cracked corn is a better cheaper alternative controls brown patch also plus you are not jacking up the soil and environment by putting salt into the ground and water. Just wait and put it on before a soaking rain otherwise the animals may eat it. Seed in the fall.
Lol my Amazon account doesn't lie and shows that I paid $9.98 for this 40lb bag on June 14th, 2020. May have been a super slick deal but surely not lying. I had paid $36.99 a year earlier.
Yup I got the same deal. Wish I had bought more honestly.
These are 12%(ish) seed. It's a $40 bag of dirt. They also have a sell by date and likely a pile of stickers covering that initial date.
Lol this isn't dirt. It's grass seed, synthetic fertilizer and milorganite. It's actually pretty good stuff but I wouldn't pay retail. I can get Milo, seed, high N fertilizer and just mix em together. This deal is about the right price though.

- Using only with existing lawn (which was thinning in spots)
- Aerating first
- Applying in the Fall, not Springtime

The bad reviews are from ill informed people using this to reseed a lawn
