Essentially the same kind as the Frigidaire and the countless no name brands out there?

I'd love a deep discount on those big GE ones.

These things are really junk IMO. Got one last summer and returned it.

The ice cubes that it makes are small, take too long, and you need to remove them immediately after they are produced because they will melt again once they are deposited into the completed ice chamber. Not useful for any venue where you need a lot of ice at once. You end up having to babysit it and call people to see who needs ice. Too slow for on-the-fly production for one person, melts too quickly for mass production for any group.

I just ended up getting silicon ice cube trays from Aldi and making ice in bulk at the bottom of my house freezer (the bottom is the closest by far since cold air sinks). It takes just over an hour and a half from room temp, but for that amount of time, I get substantially more and larger ice cubes.

Like all kitchen appliances there is a max limit of spending where you go from cheap Chinese made junk (including stuff sold at Williams and Sonoma for $300-400) to quality commercial grade products.

Every retail ice maker RECYCLES the ice - which i believe is what you are referring to. The ice melts and even if you use bottled water it tastes horrible.

Your comment about speed of ice making is also very relevant and most dont consider it. If it doesnt make it fast enough and doesnt have a chilled bucket (most machines do NOT have this feature - prevents ice from melting) then it will melt before others can use the ice.

If you are serious about an ice machine the cheapest quality ones ive seen range in the $700-800 price point. As you go higher you get useful features that will only improve your experience. Places that sell Wolf/Sub Zero are the places you want to go to: specialty luxury home appliance stores not big box stores.

We throw alot of parties and originally I wanted to buy cheap ice machines for that reason - buy it use it for a year toss it.

I did that for one year spent around $200 - my units (3) didnt last a year

https://www.build.com/high-end-ic...rs/c125778

These are under counter so they will be more expensive - but worth a look to see what features are included in the top models. I personally think $600-800 should suffice if you do some shopping and dont just buy retail without haggling

In for one. I've had several of the cone style ones, this is worth a try.

Supposedly quiet, which would be a huge benefit.

I got a IKICH Portable Bullet Ice Maker on Amazon 3 years ago almost on the dot. We use it mostly during the summer when our fridge ice maker can't keep up with demand.

We only use distilled water in it, and its still going on strong. I do not recommend using tap water in these, even if it is filtered.

You can't buy the one we got on Amazon anymore, but I think most of these are the same machine with different brands printed on them.

At some point we want to try a nugget ice maker, which have gotten a lot cheaper in the last year or two.

No clue. I wasn't talking about their fridges, but their desktop icemakers which are of a different and more expensive class than the one the OP posted.

That's the GE I was thinking of. The GE OPAL. They have come down, but not enough for me so far.

Having said that, I do see them being more widely available. I saw them stocked at an ubran small-sized Target, and I never expected to see that.

GE is absolute trash across the board

Their "luxury" line is laughably bad like slapping a Mercedes badge on a Kia

The Opal as an ice machine is even more trash than their large appliances and even on sale is grossly overpriced

Commercial units start at $600-700 why would anyone buy an OPAL for $400-500 at that point?

Space? They are smaller, and meant for a counter-top.

What's the shape of the ice? Is it actual cubes? I'm looking for one that makes actual cubes.

It's a strange preference, I know.....

Yes, this makes clear cubes. Not the crappy bullet style ice most others make.
