I thought manual defrost was preferred over the auto-defrost freezers due to the heating coils in those causing nearby frozen meat to go bad prematurely?
Manual defrost is also better for longer storage. There is less chance of freezer burn.

I don't quite understand the difference. This freezer would go into my garage and likely will not come out again unless it breaks. We will just keep frozen meat/frozen products in there. Do I even have to worry about the distinction between manual and auto-defrost in this use case? Or will it require constant matience?

HELL YES!! I bought a frost-free garage-ready version a year ago to keep baby milk. It stops freezing every 3 to 4 months. I had to throw away 8 gallons of breast milk. that's much more valuable than grocery meat.

You got that backwards. Fridge, sure, but not a deep freeze. the extra heaters, sensors etc. all suck more energy, always go bad, and then the coils freeze up and stop working. Frost free is the biggest cause of freezers dying.

I picked one up yesterday. It is solid. Good space. Less energy with manual defrost because a fan isn't kicking on all the time. Thanks!

I wouldn't put it in the garage. Keep it indoors and it will last much longer. I like the upright version vs a chest, though. Much easier to see what you have.

I got this a few weeks ago and am so far happy. It's a fairly small upright freezer, but good for our small family for now.

I notice that the compressor seems to be running about half the time, to keep temperatures at about -2 or -3F on the "2" setting. The front door of the unit is also quite cool to the touch. Is that what other SDers who bought this are finding?

The unit only draws about 1 amp, so I think that's alright. But I'm surprised that the compressor still needs to run so frequently. I suppose undersized compressors means lower freezer cost.

Its fine/okay if you receive it without damage. The thermostat dial creates heat so ice forms and melts at the very top. Can sort of be remedied by sliding a piece of the thin Styrofoam in that up-most space. I paid $200 for mine. Fedex stressed me out by delaying it 3 days after it was supposed to be here - I was thinking it was damaged in transit - and it was, but not bad enough to return.
