No. You port your real number to google voice and then purchase any mvno deal there is at any time, get a new fake number from them when activating and set google voice to forward your calls to that number. You use your regular dialer or goigle voice dialer on your phone. Done and you never have to deal with porting nonsense again and can take advantage of mvno deals at any time.
This is not true - it's better than before but I've came across several institutions where it didn't work because they don't accept voip numbers.
It's not a stop gap, I have used GV as my main number for more than ten years now. I don't need to worry about or deal with the customer service about port-in or port-out my number while taking full advantage of whatever introductory promotional rates various wireless providers have been offering. I just got a new number everytime and forward the calls to my main number to whatever new numbers I got. Have disposable numbers from time to time can also come in handy when you don't have to give someone or some place your permanent main number.

You have to pay Google 20 bucks to port your number to Google voice so what's the point of using google, for that just switch and get the deal from other carrier where porting is free

When GV first started, 2FA using Google number might be an issue, but now, most of the places accept GV. Haven't had that issue for quite some time.

I've experienced the opposite. In the past 2FA was allowed with GV. But now lots of companies are not allowing it.

For example Uber doesn't.

Can anyone verify what the 'reduced speed' is? I was considering using this sim card & a USB dongle so that my son could have basic Internet & streaming - he just moved into an apartment in a small town.

I tried porting my number over to infimobile. They were completely incompetent. I almost cancelled my switch over to them, it reached that point!

I ended up just taking a new number. I'm not sure if they're capable of porting a number successfully. My issue went on for a couple weeks.

There are services which will pick up calls for you, forward for you, and let you text through them...but none of them will do all of that simultaneously.
Voip.ms does all that. Only downside is MMS must be done through email forwarding or directly on their website.

I'm not sure if they simultaneously ring thru voip & PSTN forwarding , but it will roll over if you set it up that way.

Well that's to prevent people making a ton of Uber accounts.

Uber and Lyft hate Google Voice numbers so you can use your real number if it's in GV

When activating select the eSIM option. Enter the activation code from your physical SIM card. Done. Discard the physical SIM card they send you.

Didn't realize this was an option. I activated on physical sim then had to set up esim via chat.

I just did the same. Activated the physical sim. logged in and at the bottom left says "sim replacement". the first eSIM didn't work when I did the QR code but chatted (only waited 10 seconds for an agent) and they reissued another eSIM and i got it OTA to my phone. no need to install from the QR code. Only thing that I never realized was all the apns needed for Verizon MVNO's. US Mobile has 4 apn's and same as Infimobile. the apn settings where all grayed out so I had to manually add it using the mytechsuite app.

I got voice, sms/mms, data working. using google's internet speed test I'm around 64mbps at around 7pm.. and now is easing up to 102mbps at a little after 9pm (I'm in L.A., CA) I'm keeping my main number w/ Mint which expires next month then using US mobile's light plan to port my main number. Used a new number w/ Infi. So far so good. Crossing fingers.
