A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

It's not a movie, but I just watched the last episode of "The Returned" - a French language "zombie" drama (8 episodes in total.) Think David Lynch meets Stephen King. Absolutely fantastic.

This is the End - Funny, but I was expecting it to be funnier.

Grown Ups 2 - Not great, but I think I liked it better than the first one.

Iron Man 3 - Good, but it kind of felt like Robert Downey, Jr. phoned it in.

After Earth - Another M. Night Shamalamadingdong crapfest.

White House Down - Basically Die Hard in the White House. John McClain Cale is applying for a Secret Service job when the White House is taken over by terrorists. I had a hard time taking this as a serious action movie, with Jamie Fox as president LMAO and Channing Tatum not very convincing as an action hero. Also, I couldn't help but laugh thinking, if something like this were to really happen, how B-HO would be crying and pooping his pants.

Zero dark thirty - fast forward to the last 25 minutes. first 3-4 hours is a whole bunch of nothin
Iagree Haven't been able to watch it from beginning to end in one sitting. Finally saw the ending yesterday, and even that was a bit disappointing.
The first 2+ hours: blah, blah, blah... YawnSleepingSnoring2
Finally some action: woot Crap, it's too dark to see what's going on. Target found. Ranting

Cheap Thrills
Two people meet a couple at a bar and play a game of "What would you do for money?" Good stuff. Kind of weird (yet impressive) seeing SNL alum and Anchorman actor David Koechner in such a dramatic role. I'll do people a favor from looking it up and say he's the bald, "whammy" guy from Anchorman.

Love the Beast
Eric Bana documentary about his love for his first car, a Ford GT Falcon Coupe that he bought as a teenager after seeing it in Mad Max. He and his childhood friends still use it as an excuse to hang out together, and they turned it into a street racer and raced it in the Australian rally race that is done on city streets and is the only rally of its kind left in the world.

It's far more than just a car or racing movie. It's about exploring relationships with inanimate objects and why they can be so important to us.

Two thumbs up. Eat Oops, sorry, I'm eating. Fork down. Thumbsup There we go.

300: Rise of an Empire - Not even close to as good as 300. Basically this is the story of the other Greek nations as the Spartans defend the Hot Gates for as long as they can, and what happens after. It also gives some background information on Persia invading Greece. Highly inaccurate on most accounts and even more so than 300 if that's possible. It wasn't even as picturesque as the first either. Lots of dulled and muted overcast backdrops and as much if not more slo-mo shots than the first. Highly unimpressive.

Made it through Dark Touch. Not sure if the girl was touched by evil or by pedophiles. Don't care.

"The Act of Killing" - Interesting approach to a dark topic, but it didn't resonate with me the way it did with others. 3/5

"Rush" - I don't follow/have an interest in autosports, but this story of rival drivers held my interest. 3.5/5

"The Great Beauty" - It was nicely shot, but it really didn't hold my interest at all. 1.5/5

"The Past" - Eh. 2.5/5

"August: Osage County" - Great cast and well acted - they did a great job painting a picture of some seriously damaged people. 3.5/5

"Inside Llewyn Davis" - Coen Brothers! Pretty good. 3.5/5

"Enough Said" - A decent enough rom-com. 3/5

"Get the Gringo" - Mel Gibson as a tough guy. Kind of a stretch, but it was decent enough. 3/5

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" - Really well acted, shot and they didn't make it overly heavy handed. 4/5

"They Came Back / Les Revenants " – Not very good, but it was (partially, I think) the inspiration for a fantastic TV series of the same name. 2/5

"Cheap Thrills" – Not bad – pretty dark and you could kind of see where it was going, but it was a decent watch. 3/5

"Broken Circle Breakdown" – Kind of a bummer of a film about a young family and their relationship falling apart. 2/5

"No" – A Chilean ad man is hired by the political opposition trying to out the dictator (Pinochet) and tries using American style ad concepts to come up with ad spots. It didn't hold my attention, but it was an interesting premise. 2/5

"The Wolf of Wall Street" – Good, dumb fun. 4/5

Just watched a trailer for the new Simon Pegg movie, which comes out later this year. Looks really good.

Oh sure, you take the time to complain about me leaving the movie title off my post but not to say if you liked the trailer. Stick Out Tongue

47 Ronin - Had no idea it was going to be peppered with weird fantasy stuff. And for an action movie, it was kind of drawn out and boring. And normally, I like Keanu Reeves despite his lack of "accepted" acting skills, but he was really hard to take. Overall, it was blah for me. If you know what it is supposed to be going in, maybe you'll feel different.

Saw someone mention Rush up above. Had no interest in that initially, but saw it on a plane because, hey, free movie. I really, really liked it. Made me go read as much as I could about the real people.

Looks like The 47 Ronin has been remade multiple times, with the original and the first remake (1941 and 1962) getting the best ratings. Might be worth seeing them. I might have seen one of those years ago but my memory really sucks, not sure.

The Bourne movies are some of my favs. DH and DD didn't care for the last one, but I did. It's really setting things up for the next part of, the saga.

What'd you have in mind? I was going to start watching "The Vikings" - tv show from History channel. But if you have a good movie suggestion, I'm down with the curl.
I want to sit and watch this from the beginning. I started watching it and then missed a couple of episodes and never went back to it. Call me and I'll bring the popcorn!

Quote from Zoe Moon :
It helps if you've read the book. It also helps if you understand the time period when in which the movies was created. I saw the movie when it first came out and at that time it was very cutting edge, it broke all sorts of boundaries for film making. Nothing like it had been done before, at that time it was visually breathtaking.
It really was an "in the moment" movie. You had to be naive. The wow factor is lost now, in today's world of special effects. Besides, there is the deeper psychological "envelope pushing" that was so disturbing at the time.

Good to know! It's on my DRV.

Watched Gidget just for fun. I enjoyed it immensly! I forgot how tiny Sandra Dee was. Such a shame that her life ended as it did.

You're on! And extra points for Bourne. The first one is one of my all time favorite movies.

How to Make Money Selling Drugs - An actual documentary with tips from dealers. Wild. I personally can't fathom going to jail for any amount of money. I certainly disagree with Pepe who says 5 years in prison is worth $100,000. "You make $100,000 selling drugs. Hide the money. Go to jail. And when you come out you have money. If somebody gave me $100,000 to go to jail for 5 years I would take it."

Not my idea of a Slickdeal.
