Updates to answer questions

Q: Will this automatically renew?
A: NO!
Quote :
The automatic renewal provisions in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) do not apply to this membership, even if we decide to extend the free Amazon Prime offer beyond one year.
Q: Can I get this if I'm not a student (even if I have a .edu e-mail address)?
A: You might be able to. And you might not.
If you do not qualify and they catch you, Amazon will make you reimburse them for their costs
Quote :
If you do not provide documentation indicating that you meet the eligibility requirements above, you may be required to reimburse us for benefits you received as a result of your Amazon Student membership.
*I am not the arbiter of morality, but please don't abuse this by signing up if you do not meet Amazon's requirements*

Q: What happens if I already have a prime account?
A: I'm not sure, however people are reporting that if they currently have a prime account and they sign-up for the Amazon Student account, the following happens:
1. Their current prime account gets cancelled and they get a pro-rated refund
2. They get signed up for the free 1 year amazon student prime

Q: My .edu address isn't my Amazon.com address -- do I have to create a new account?
A: No
Quote :
If your .edu e-mail address isn't listed on your Amazon.com account, that's OK. The only e-mail we'll send to your .edu e-mail address is the verification e-mail. After that, other Amazon Student e-mails will be sent to the e-mail address listed on your Amazon.com account.
Q: Ohh my gosh, this is amazing, how can I thank you!?!?!
A: Students are notoriously poor. Many have to work minimum-wage jobs while taking classes to pay for rent, tuition and food. Let a student know about this deal and help them save money. Also, donating old books you have lying around the house to schools and libraries (especially those dealing with budget cuts) could potentially enrich a child's life and help them get interested in many different subjects and put them on the path to higher education.

"Join Amazon Student and get FREE Two-Day Shipping for one year with a free Amazon Prime membership ($79 value), as well as e-mail alerts for exclusive promotions. There is no cost to join--simply sign up by providing your school and major. If youre not a student, you may still be eligible for a free trial of Amazon Prime."

EDIT: This is really crazy!! Almost 2750 thumbs ups and counting! -- Over 3900 reps (I started with only 17!) Thanks everyone for all the support!

Here's the back story of how this deal came about: My sister-in-law really wanted a prime account since their's had just ended a short time go. She kept asking if I wanted to split one with her and my other siblings, but the rest of us weren't so keen on the idea because we didn't have that much of a need for it.

Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, she calls me and tells me about this Amazon Student thing and asks if I've ever heard of it. I told her no and did a search on slickdeals and google and couldn't find a thing on it. I went to the website she gave me and saw that you get Prime free for a year if you're a student, etc. etc. I verified it worked and that you could add family members to the account.

As soon as that happened, I posted it here since I've been a member for a while, but never posted a deal before (everyone is really quick on the uptake for this kind of stuff so by the time I find out about something, it's probably been on here for days already). I wanted to give back to everyone and this was the perfect opportunity.

The rest as they say, is history (1 day old history!)

my free prime ended.

I decided to go with the reduced prime fee which includes a few streaming shows - Watching ALF, as I type. First time watching it in English, since I was stationed in Germany during it's prime time =)

Yeah, I'm debating on going that route too.

At $39, that averages out to $3.25 per month.

That's pretty reasonable for 2 day shipping if you order 12 + items a year.

This was not as epic as the free prime for ordering certain books that ANYONE could get two or three years ago.

Amazon is offering 1 year Free Amazon Prime Membership for College Students. All students should currently be enrolled with valid .edu email address. Thanks stephsully

It's only for 6 months not one year. Confused and it's a watered down version of prime.

Just a heads up to people. It seems the discounted rate promotion may be over for graduated students.

I recently got an email from Amazon saying the Student status is expiring and I would need to submit documentation:

Quote :
Thank you for being an Amazon Student member. Based on our records, your Amazon Student membership will expire on Month Day, 2012. You will continue to get FREE Two-Day Shipping and have access to hundreds of thousands of movies, TV episodes and Kindle Books. The upgrade will be automatic, charging your default credit card (or another card on file) the annual Amazon Prime membership fee of $79/year.

If you're still a student, please verify your student status using this form before Month Day, 2012 to maintain your Amazon Student membership and renew your Amazon Prime membership at the discounted rate of $39/year (for up to four years.)

If you're not interested in continuing with Amazon Prime, please visit Your Account to cancel your membership. For more details, please refer to our Student Help section on expiration and the Amazon Student Terms & Conditions.
Said form includes:
Quote :
Please fill out this form to help us validate your continued eligibility for Amazon Student.

If you're able to provide proof of enrollment in at least one course at a college or university located in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico, you may be eligible to continue your Amazon Student membership and receive Amazon Prime benefits for $39/year (for up to four years.) We'll do our best to review your submission within 24 hours, but it may take us up to 3 days if we are experiencing high volumes. You'll receive a confirmation e-mail once we have a chance to review your documentation.

Proof of Enrollment
Please attach one of the following: (all documents must include your name, school name, and the date/term)

A transcript or class list for the current term (must include the date/term)
A copy or picture of your student ID (must include an expiration date or term)
A tuition bill for the current term (must include the date/term)
An official acceptance letter for the upcoming term (must include the matriculation date)
The help page [amazon.com] also says this:

Quote :
Graduating from Amazon Student
As you move from college to your next phase of life, we want to make the transition convenient by automating signup for regular Amazon Prime at a rate of $79 a year. We'll notify you several weeks before your discounted Prime annual renewal date via e-mail if we believe you may no longer be a student. This is based largely on the information you shared with us when first joining the program, such as academic level and expected graduation date.

Verifying Continuing Student Status
If you're still a student but received an e-mail saying Amazon Prime will be automatically renewed at a rate of $79/year, please visit the Amazon Student Membership page in Your Account. On that page you'll find accepted ways to prove your enrollment and can submit documentation to verify your student status. You're eligible for discounted Amazon Prime benefits for a maximum of 4 years, as long as you are an Amazon Student member.

If we find that your proof of enrollment meets our criteria, youre all set to enjoy another year of Amazon Student along with Amazon Prime benefits at the discounted $39 rate. If your verification documentation doesn't meet our criteria, or if you choose not to verify your student status, you'll automatically be upgraded to the Amazon Prime membership at the regular $79 rate and your Amazon Student membership will be canceled.

It's possible that your Amazon Prime membership may be renewed before we've had a chance to review your documentation. If you've submitted the documentation at the time of the renewal but we haven't processed it yet, you'll be charged the discounted rate of $39/year. If your documentation doesn't meet our criteria for proof onf enrollment, you will be refunded $39, charged for Amazon Prime at the $79 rate, and we'll cancel your Amazon Student membership on the date your documentation was reviewed.

Late Submissions
If you've been renewed at the $79 rate but submit documentation within 60 days to show you are still eligible for Amazon Student, we'll refund the $79 you were charged on your Prime renewal date. At the same time we'll charge you for $39 discounted Prime and re-enroll you in Amazon Student on the date your proof of enrollment was verified.
Oh well, I guess I should have signed up as a freshman shake head

I don't know if it is possible to re-enroll in the future when I head back for grad school.

From my account information page about Student Membership though, I don't think so:
Quote :
You may cancel Amazon Student to end your free shipping benefits for any reason. Please be aware that re-enrolling in the program will not reinstate these benefits.
Frown

One year free. One year half off. Not bad.

My free Student Prime Membership just ended on 8/1/2012, and Amazon charges me $39 for Prime till 8/1/2013. Is this a discounted price for this time only or will it be $75 next year?

Could be hit or miss. Come next year they might offer it to you at $39 again or might charge you the $79. Depends on how generous they are going to fill at the time probably.
I just re-uped mine last night for $39 and did not have to submit any proof.

shake head With every thing rising in cost, just to survive gets harder as time goes.People hunt for ways to make their money stretch. This kind of resource is not holy yet survival is a natural thing.Sad that we some times have to take a step down with our moral values for the sake of survival. It is like being stranded some where unknown to you. With out food or water, no resources at hand. Then you will eat or drink what ever you can find for survival. Things that you NEVER would if your situation was not desperate. Simply meant as an explanation rather than an excuse for behavior. Please reply with your thoughts.
