If I were you, I will try to call CS then keep asking them to change this $30 plan. Some was able to change prepaid to this plan without activation part or buying new sim kit.
Keep calling and ask them to hook you up with this $30 plan. This is best way and nothing to lose.

Other and last option is port to GV.

I went from on contract to this $30 prepaid plan and ported my number without a hitch. My postpaid was still active until the cut-over and all I had to do was add money!

To what degree of success has the calling CS to change plans worked in the past? I would try, but every call to 611 requires getting through the automated prompts and takes a while...

I've had my prepaid plan for 2 years, is that enough for them to value royalty?

"New Activations Only" Port out and port in. If you have a balance, use it up by switching to a monthly or daily plan. This is prepaid. There is no support and no loyalty. Sign a contract if you want that.

Prepaid customer direct number is 877-778-2106 then say " I don't have one " then
say " representative " to talk to live CS. I called so many time but wait time is less 1-2 minutes everytime.
If one gives you a hard time or doesn't know about $30 plan or can't help you, simply hang up and dial again to talk to another one.
You have nothing to lose. Try and let us know.

Solid advice...Don't fight it

I've always had great experience with T-Mobile's CS when I call the regular line and have them transfer me to the prepaid division. Seems like I always get a live person a lot faster.

Royalty can't hurt Prepaid usually gets little loyalty value, since there is no contract and generally less profit...

T-Mobile is the only good nationwide GSM prepaid carrier in the US though. Almost all expats and students I know use T-Mobile. Because at&t sucks (in terms of pricing) unless you need an iPhone.

They also treat their prepaid users like dirt, unlike T-Mobile. T-Mobile sells sims for like $2 on their site. at&t doesn't at all unless you call and ask, and I just did 2 days ago, they told me I could go to a store and get one for $25, or have them send me one for $5, but at the end she just recommended me buying a phone from a "Walmart or Dollar General" and using the sim from that.

Thanks at&t. I didn't even know what a Dollar General was until you told me. Just because I need a sim for prepaid, does not mean I'm a drug dealer. Dicks.

Download the google voice app from the Play Store, and go through the setup wizard. You should be able to get it setup fine. If you have issues, come back and report

Using the Google Voice app mentioned, I believe it will use your talk minutes.
