Italian and working for the Spanish. But he's really Genoan. Even though Genoa is part of Italy, at the time it was a very independent city-state. So ties to Italy are tenuous even from the start.
No one wanted to fund him and even the Spanish only agreed because Isabella was a nut who wanted to spread Christianity at all costs. But it always seemed to me that celebrating Columbus Day as an Italian holiday would be like celebrating the atomic bomb as a German accomplishment.

Hahaha! Too true. I guess I'm not a huge fan of Columbus...he did a pretty neat thing in braving the ocean and whatnot, but I just think he enabled a lot of negative things to happen to the natives and the natural land...but I guess if it wasn't him it would have been someone else eventually...
