Pardon my ignorance. Is the Hemnes brand stuff a lot better quality than typical Ikea stuff?

Good question! The only Ikea furniture I own just so happens to be Hemnes set - the bed frame, the nightstands, and the mirror. I paid full price for all and have been happy with the quality for the price I paid. The bed frame required assembly; if I remember correctly, I think it took maybe 30-45 minutes.

Yes. I have a couple Hemnes solid pine bookshelves that have survived a couple years now without any damage.

The Hemnes line is solid wood vs particleboard like the rest of their stuff.

Weird... when you click individual items, they list the end date of the promotion to be 8/5/12 but in the link with all of the items, it lists the sale period to be 7/12-8/4/12? Just a heads up if you're planning to purchase towards the end of the promotion period. (Or you could just call and ask tomorrow when they are open.)

I see some interesting things!! Thanks OP, repped.

Hey Rokket, I've been eyeing the Hemmes set furniture pieces every time I go to IKEA. Do you how the bed frame would work with a standard size (queen) box spring? I'm currently just using a metal frame with no head or foot board.

Unfortunately not meant for people whose feet extend passed the end of the mattress.

I have the hemnes bedframe and I love it... but I don't understand your question. You buy the bed frame, don't forget to buy the $10 metal beam in the middle! The box spring and the mattress go into the bed frame. I always forget this beam when purchasing ikea's bedframes.

EDIT: Actually, I looked around a bit and couldn't find it separately, but I think the Ikea online website sells it as a package so people don't end up forgetting it... I believe it's that box listed below:

2 3/8"
49 1/2"

IKEA bed frames typically don't use a box spring but just the wooden slatted bed base and the mattress. I'm asking how, in addition to those two things, the bed would look and function with an additional layer of box spring in between the mattress and base. Would the bed be too high and rise over the foot board, making it look silly or actually work out well? I'm having a hard time imaging. I like a high bed.

We have the queen Hemnes and use the midbeam + box spring. The box spring is basically flush with the frame, and the mattress sits above it, just like pretty much every bed ever.

We like it quite a bit. Do make sure that you align the corners square, or you'll get mattress slippage.

I was looking at the Hemnes sales stuff tonight at IKEA. I was tempted but can't afford it right now. We use one of the white Hemnes dressers in our daughter's room. It's survived 3 years of her using it without any scratches. The drawers slide out smoothly which is more than I can say for the rest of the dressers in our house.

I don't know that it's any better than more expensive IKEA dressers, but I've been happy with it so far.

Its a good balance between value and quality. Sure, you won't be getting a Pottery Barn quality dresser, but it is much better than the particle board dressers. I have the 8 drawer dresser for four years, moved twice, and it is still in excellent condition.
