The Official Car Talk Thread

I suppose can continue the conversation from the Funniest Pics thread here, along with any other car talk..

Quote from Jabbit :
The SLS is pretty nuts, I have seen a couple on the streets and they sounds almost musclecar-ish. I also saw an Enzo at the car show (it was actually Cars & Coffee in Irvine CA which is pretty well known). I would like an older M3, the last one that had the inline-6. I have never been in one but they seem like they would be a lot of fun. Not really practical in New England though.

We should start an official "Car Chat" thread.
That enzo is awesome. I spotted a 599GTO at F1 as well. There were a few people leaning up against it taking pics. If I was the owner I'd have been pissed.

BMW is bringing back the straight 6 for 2013 (or maybe 14).. They're doing a twin turbo version in the name of fuel economy. There was rumor about there being a third turbo in there too.

As far as I know, yes. If it doesn't on a Federal level, I know for a fact I am covered at my State level. I don't know if I have enough scratch for a 4-door Skyline GTS-t. I know I can't afford a GT-R. Not sure what else to look at that would be semi-workable/repairable. 4 doors is a must, manual transmission feels like a must but in reality is a "nice to have". Any suggestions?
I don't know enough about any kind of cars specific to Japan (other than Skyline) to offer any kind of ideas. heh. I love the look of the older GT-Rs, but there are plenty of vehicles available stateside already which I'd rather have before dealing with import of a 25 y/o Japanese car.

I'm not sure about what they were making 25 years ago but I bet there are some diesel versions of cars sold elsewhere that aren't/weren't available in the US.

I'm pretty open as far as car interest goes which is why I thought something old, ugly, cheap, reliable, and different would be fun to have. I'd love to have something RHD in the US just to be different. But not "old USPS vehicle" different, that is just not something I'm into.

There are some diesel Hi-Lux pickups and SUVs that look intriguing, but they don't quite do it for me (relative to the work involved getting them here that is). Don't get me wrong, they are sweet, but I'm not really a truck/SUV guy.

Those probably would be more along my line, but I was thinking more in terms of cars. I can't think of any specific ones offhand, especially from japan though.

Gotcha. I personally want to find a project Triumph TR6 here.. but apparently project ones are harder to find out here in CA than in TX.

I've also toyed with the idea of a late 80s air-cooled 911. But, we'll see. That's down the line.

Both of those would be really fun cars. Air-cooled Porsches have been on the rise $$-wise so that might be tough. I can see the appeal though, the lines on the 911 is so classic.

This wouldn't be a project car, more of a DD that needs work a lot laugh out loud So maybe I am just dreaming but I thought it would be interesting. Looks like I can get a 1990 Skyline GTS-t 4 door from Japan to US for about 11-12k. A bit more than I initially thought.

Agreed. The price rise of the air-cooled 911s were not something I expected. The TR6 is at least a bit more reasonable. 5-8k in good shape. 10-20 in pretty much pristine shape.

I suppose 11k isn't too bad. Though, I'm not a huge fan of the 1990. Looks so much like my old Mazda MX-6. Dontknow

laugh out loud MX-6, I like the first gen. I'd love to have a mint one of those. A couple of my last cars have been mint-condition one owner 15+ year old cars. I like the time capsule effect.

TR6 is a sound investment in the next couple years, I think it would be tough to lose too much money on one of those.

Any suggestions for a used car under ~$12k that is 4 doors, manual transmission, and semi-fun to drive? I know you are a BMW (well, German I guess) guy, a high mileage 06+ 3 series is appealing. Also looking at the first gen CTS-V.

It was my first car. '91 MX-6 the boxy one. I never liked the rounded ones so much. That thing was a rust bucket. laugh out loud I loved it though. Fun little stick shift to get me through high school.

3-series is always a good choice, IMO. I mean, you could get an e46 or e36 M3 for around that money if not less. If you're pretty comfortable with working on it yourself, shouldn't be too crazy. eBay actually has a decent e36 M3 guide: http://www.ebay.com/gds/How-To-Pr...443/g.html

I've never been a big fan of buying first model year vehicles.. but the CTS-V would be a killer pick up too. I'd just do my research to find out any known issues and how difficult it is to work on it myself.

I've had my eye on some e36 M3s, that car is on my short list. Never owned a BMW so I'd like to try it. I think I'd be happy with a e46 330 too. I have no issue working on cars myself, but I'm not inclined to do timing belts/water pumps/clutches, things like that. I've done full suspension swaps, brakes, all kinds of stuff like that.

First gen CTS-V used the C5 Z06 engine (5.7L) then swapped over to the C6 Corvette engine. But yeah they are basically a 4 door Corvette.

I'd just make sure belts and water pumps were done recently and the clutch is in good shape. I imagine most other stuff is pretty easy to get at/replace/repair. Plus, it's a non-turbo straight 6 which should make things easier, too.

That looks sweet. Is this a production model, or just a concept?

Time for the Barrett Jackson auction again on National Geographic channel.

Rick Hendrick just paid $825,000 for a 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat in a charity auction.

"The sale of the 1-of-1 special-edition 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, the fastest and most powerful muscle car ever, will benefit our beloved not-for-profit charity Opportunity Village. The Hellcat's 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine and 0001 vehicle identification number has an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds at 126 mph, 707 horsepower and 650 feet per pound of torque on tap right from the assembly line.

Adding to the exclusivity, the donated muscle car will be the only Dodge Challenger to ever have a Viper-exclusive Stryker Red exterior — hand-painted at the Dodge Viper paint facility — and it will include special Hellcat badging, specific VIN documentation and one-of-a-kind memorabilia. The Hellcat will be sold Saturday at 6 p.m.
